Add one more to the list. Opened laptop screen, and a crack running from middle left to center bottom. Laptop is not usable any more without screen. HP will not fix it!

Tom66 that really stinks....I did link this post to my BBB complaint that I filed last week. Hopefully HP will see this and get the message that they have an inferior product. Let me know if you need any help with the replacement of the screen..but the directions on the previous page are pretty indepth.

Everyone - DON"T mess around fixing your screen until you've ALSO spoken to your credit card company.

VISA Signature Cards (like the United Airlines mileage VISA and others) give you double the original warranty. American Express has the Buyer's Assurance program. Both are free & worth pursuing to see if they can resolve or fix your screens. YES HP should fix them if you did not damage them, but seems like no one on this thread has been successful.

Here's the blurb from VISA:
Warranty Manager Service ? Get double the time
period of the original manufacturer?s written U.S. repair
warranty up to one (1) full year on warranties of three
(3) years or less when you purchase an item entirely
with your eligible Visa Signature card. You can also
enjoy convenient features like warranty registration
and the option to purchase Extended Service Agreements
with Visa Performance Guarantee.
See : http://usa.visa.com/personal/v...y-manager.jsp#anchor_2

You can also ask VISA NOT to pay that portion of your bill that includes the laptop purchase until the issue is resolved.

You can also buy extended warranties from your credit card company. Visa sells a 3 yr warranty for a laptop up to $700 of value for only $48. NOW, this is only an extension of your original warranty which usually does not include accidental damage or abuse which as many of you are experiencing, a difficult thing to prove one way or another.

It's worth a try.

I did buy the "extended" warranty for my G60 and my now dead Averatec laptops. VISA repaired my Averatec 3 times and ultimately declared it lemon and gave me enough $ to buy another one, which is how I financed my HP G60

BTW, I own a G60-230 w/ the "standard" screen, the 16:9 widescreen w/ the too glossy finish WITH a bezel, not the fancier "bright view" one with the edge to edge glass. So far no problem w/ mine nor my friend's after almost 4 months with occassionally picking it up by the opened lid, which one should NOT do!!! but we all do it and they "should" be able to handle that.

GOOD LUCK folks and don't pick them up by the lids!!! even if I do do that!b ;)

Hello Stockjock and thanks for the breakdown. I've replaced a few LCDs before, but I also was having difficulty getting started.

Like the others here, my HP G60-235dx has the same cracked screed, in the same location.

I was able to purchase a new replacement for $69.99, including shipping, on eBay.
This was a "Buy it Now" purchase. It appears they have some remaining, but later sales have a slightly higher price.

The link is:

laptopslcds

If the link doesn't work, the sellers store name is laptopslcds

Since the replacement LCD just came this morning, I cannot report on quality. It does carry a 120 warranty.

I'm a big fan of HP (writing this on a HP dv9925nr 17" lappy and have 2 Elite m9350n desktops).
This clearly seems to be a design defect on this model.
In my view, HP customer service is as good as it gets in todays world.
If anyone has found a financial solution other than BBB, please let me know.

Please keep us posted on the response you get from HP. I can't believe we as consumers have to go through so much grief just to prove to HP that this must be a screen flaw or an install flaw on these laptops. I have put so much time and effort into trying to comunicate to HP and thier only response was that they are NOT responsible in anyway. They would have been happy to fix it for a fee that was close to the price I paid for the laptop. I STILL have a bitter taste in mouth just talking about it and will neverbuy another HP anythig again. Stockjock, I hope you success and did you link this forum to thier customer (lack of) support department. I would love for them to read this.....

Ruxton and others...I will keep everyone up to date on my BBB complaint..of course HP wants everything from under the sun which I don't have because I've moved since the incidence. I also did include a link to this thread in my complaint.

Jim, tell her to never, ever, ever hold it by the screen...or tell her to buy the accident insurance right now and then send it through the baggage handlers at the airport!:D

ok....thought I'd give you my update on my BBB complaint. I finally got a call from HP today and they tried to tell me they've never heard of this problem with this model and at first it sounded like they weren't going to do anything for me...but then I asked the guy to read this thread (I put a link to it in the BBB complaint) and he said he just noticed it and I said I think he would be shocked at how many people had this same exact problem. He seemed to start singing a different tune after that...he then said, he was sorry this happened and said he wished I bought the screen from the HP parts store as he could give me a 20% discount rebated back, when I told him that the repair from HP was going to cost $450 (that is what I was told when I first contacted them) and I thought that was excessive for a lappy I just bought for $550 3 weeks before he again offered up something new...a 2 year extended warrany with accident insurance with it...he said the cost was almost $200, would that satisfy me? I told him that was more than fair compensation. So, I guess the system really does work. I will take back my thoughts about HP now once this all got settled. So, in the end I got an extra 2 years of warranty with accident insurance in place of getting a refund for the money I spent on the screen. So, for all you that had this happen to you...file a complaint and maybe you'll get some satisfaction.

congrats stockjock on your results. I had offered to purchase the accident warranty after my screen had cracked for no reason. I tried to give HP an option to fixing thier problem. They agreed to sell it to me then after a slight pause clarified that the screen (now broken) would not be covered and it would still cost me over $500 to fix. I am a little tempted to contact the HP service manager with a forward of this thread but I'm not sure my blood pressure could handle the follow up phone circle jerk I know will sure to follow. Anyways, glad it worked out anyways......

I have the same G60-235DX that all the sudden have a crack screen from the inside. Never drop them or anything, all the sudden it happened. Then I followed the instrsuction in this forum (thanks guys) to replace the screen. Then it works fine for a couple of days.

Then I got white spots on my display that getting worst and now all I got in my display is one white screen. I can use external monitor and use the laptop but can believe it has a different problem. Any idea on what may have cause this.

I purchased the hp g 60 less than 6 months ago and my lcd screen fractured as well with no force placed on it. I have called hp and asked that the repair since it is still under warranty but the rep said they cannot as it must have been something that I caused. I am waiting on an upper level manager to call me on Monday to try and resolve. I'll keep you posted.

I bought an HP G60 2 months ago. One day I open the lid and I have a nice 'V' shaped crack on the inside of the screen. It originated 1/4 ways across the bottom from the left.

As many of you have attempted, I sent it in to HP and got the message that it was damaged and not under warranty. I explained to them that the top would pop sometimes when opening the laptop. It originated from the left side. I was told it had nothing to do with it.

I bought a new screen and found this site when looking for installation instructions. I FOllowed the advice in here and sent a complaint to the BBB.

Long story short, when I took the laptop apart, the left hinge was so tight I couldn't open it with my bare hands once it was removed. The right hinge I could move. So I lossened the hinge slightly and now the screen opens up real smoothly.

There is no doubt that the left hinge was so tight that it torqued the screen when trying to open up the laptop. Those who have had the same problem, check out your hinges. They may be too tight. Just putting in another screen is a bandaid. You must loosen the hinge if yours is too tight or it will cause the display to torque while opening it.

Hope this helps someone

I bet your white dots are from a bad connection of the "video cable" to the LCD. I had the same problem. I would recheck that connection to make sure its snug and you hear a "click" when attaching it...it took me 3 times of thinking I had done it correctly, which means 3 times of opening up the laptop lcd area before getting it right.

one last thing....PLEASE DO A BBB COMPLAINT!! and point them to this Forum Thread as evidence there is a problem.

jan,2009 I opened and closed my notebook and the screen was cracked it was only 1 month old and they refused to fix it they told me that it was my fault.
I spoke to ten differant people at HP as of april 2009 they closed the case.
I read in the forum to cantact the BBB in CA.
after 30 days after fileing a complaint with the BBB they agreed to fix it.
just got it back works great

thanks

I love this thread.. I just called in to HP about a little spot on the screen that happened, and it just gradually got bigger over the last week. He tried telling me it was physical damage so they won't cover it, I said no it's not physical damage as I did nothing to make that happen. And the spot happened right in the same spot that matches up to the line right below the keyboard that sticks up a bit, and when it got bigger it went straight across that way.. I definately has to have something to do with that. He said I could send it in and they would decide after looking at it if they will fix it under warranty or not.. If they call me back and say they won't, it will supposively cost me $399 to fix it.. The funny part is that I even said to him this has to be a common problem with this laptop because of the spot it happened and why I am sure it happened.. he said "unfortunately this is not a common problem sir"... So I immediately googled it because I was sure it was.. and sure enough, it surely is. Thank you everyone, now I know what to do if they say they won't cover it.

So, I've seen the forums on this site and on the HP site.. And everyone is complaining about the g60.. Well, today, my G71 did the same thing.. looks like it's been beaten with a baseball bat.. the best part is, it did it while it was at home alone. But apparently HP won't cover the self destruct setting they programed into the damn screens...

I called, went through the same run around everyone else has. I even made the tech go look at the forums that are 3 pages long on the HP site, and then link to this one. His response is "They would fix it for you if it was a G60... the G series, doesn't mean that the G60 and G71 are the same... they are manufactured differently. The G60 may have a manufactures defect, but at this time, we don't have the evidence to support the claim that the G71 has one as well.. Maybe in a few months we can replace this for free."

Well... Anyone have any issues with the G71? My assumption is the G71 began being sold a bit after the g60, so there hasn't been the overwhelming reports like on the G60.. either way, has anyone else had this issue with other models?

Hello, I am havin the same trouble with a G60-230 US -- the screen cracked when I really hadn't done anything that should have cracked it. Now I'm wondering about replacing it. I could buy a new screen for about $100, and if it would then be reliable, then that would be worth it. But if the new screen is going to break again in a month, then why pay another $100 to end up right back where I am? So, have any of you that have replaced the screen had better luck with the replacement? Or have they promptly broken again?

Thanks for your help.

DWG...I have not had one problem with the replaced screen. But, it sounds like to me from what Brightpinkshad has said that HP is now fessing up that there was a problem with the G60 models and HP is now repairing them...

add another one to the list asking for help. Does anyone know if HP is now aware of the problem with this model?
