Ruxton, I can understand your frustration...We got a bad product and this huge company won't stand behind it....as usual, the little guy gets the shaft!

How are you guys breaking your screens?

Obviously, they are not broken when brand new in the box, so of course the store won't take them back, as that's considered physical damage.

HP will never do anything about that either, unless it's a known issue they warranty for, & they only do that for nVidia-related failures & certain 9000 series hinge failures.

I've seen hundreds of these model notebooks sold with not one person complaining of a cracked LCD...so i have to wonder what is causing it...cause LCDs don't just magically break.
There's always pressure or force or something that causes it.

How are you guys breaking your screens?
you make it sound like we are tossing the darn things around and then are blaming HP for our mishandling of the laptop. I can assure you that that was not the case in my wife's laptop. She walked from one room in the house to another...maybe 30 feet and by the time she restarted the laptop she had this big line down the middle of the screen....by the next day the screen looked like a baseball bat had been taken to it. I've got 5 laptops in my house and have never seen anything like this damage before.
cause LCDs don't just magically break
in this case of this laptop....that is exactly what happened. I'm just as geeky as you and I know when something isn't right and in the case of this specific laptop..something was wrong.

I believe you & can understand how crappy this is. :(

Just wondering how it's happening...

My guess is pressure when holding it from the back of lid to to the LCD, but no one here is telling details, so i'm just guessing.

n7..sorry for being so short to you earlier...its just frustration that people think we are breaking these things and then trying to get HP to pony up....I'm guessing there is a pressure point on the backside of the screen near the top that is the root of the problems. It seems that normal pressure on that area causes the screen to fracture...but this is only a guess.

Well. I've had mine for 3 months now. My screen just did the same this afternoon. Now. I've owned more laptops than most folks, my God I started with luggables. I've run global systems support for a Fortune 50, and I can tell you cracked screens happen to other people - NOT ME! ;)

Well. There's a first time for everything I guess. Add me to the list of mysteriously cracked LCDs on this model. Walked about 100 ft with it opened it and bam.

Going to visit Fleabay and see if I can get a replacement...

Add another to the list! Razorjack, your situation sounds almost exactly to the "T" what happened to us.

I'd be tempted to make the rounds of Best Buy stores in my vicinity (SF Bay Area) and ask to 'see' the HP little laptop, and pick it up by the screen half and give it a bit of mid-air torque. With practice one should be able to crack the screen like a champ. A dozen or two coming into the defective bin at HP every few days should send up a little red flag. Have at it, chaps. NB: I advocate no breakage of laws and intend myself to stay at home, watching Paladin reruns.

After I replaced my LCD with the new one, I played around with the old one.......It had a crack streaming out of the tiny white clip that fastened the 2 pieces together, and no support pads against the lid portion of the laptop where it cracked. It sure didn't take much twisting to cause many other cracks. I don't know why it cracked originally, but I know it was not by any abuse. My whole point is that HP sure as hell can't claim that I BROKE IT and not take any responsibilty for this issue. The way they handle the situation has spoiled any future purchases from HP that I will ever make and I am telling everyone that cares to listen.

I havd the same issue with HP. HP claims it was my fault, which is not true, then offered to fix it for $350.00. I only paid $599.00 for it. I am opting to repair it myself, rather then let their yahoo's create more problems. I purchased 2 of these laptops. So far my other is holding its own. I agree, the only way HP will recall and fix the problem is is people report the issue to the BBB. It seems to me tha HP lowered the price of the laptop knowing we would be paying them to fix there faulty hardware. The BBB will be receiving my complaint first thing Monday morning. I'll let you know what comes of it. Good luck everyone.

I have this same model - HP G60-235DX can someone please tell me how I can remove the keyboard to clean beneath it?

My daughter accidentaly spilled gatorade on it, so obviously the fault is our own - I've called tech support and of course it will cost $ 350 for them to repair (when I paid only 550 for the computer itself! Ack!)

Anyway - exuastive google searches tell me it is not difficult to remove the keyboard, but I can not find any instruction on it, only that it's what I should do.

Right now, the keys are all working, because of the spill some are slow to release and the touchpad mouse does not work (which is not an issue for me as I use an external mouse, but I know from the computers standpoint it is BAD!)

I am sure there is something beneath the keypad protecting the rest of the computer/hardware...I just need help getting there to clean it! Any help you guys can give would be REALLY appreciated!

Thanks so much . .. .

I also have the same type of problem. I purchased a G60-200 that was shipped from China March 25, 2009 and received by me March 30th. May 28th, with the unit just two months old, I notified HP that a horizontal black line, about an inch long, had developed in upper left corner. This unit had never left my family room since the time I received it and I am a senior living alone so no one else had touched it. What followed was a month of frustrating contact with off shore support, they diagnosed the problem online as a motherboard problem. I was promised twice that a return box was shipped during this month and I finally demanded that they provide a tracking number or a supervisor.

June 22nd I got a call from an english speaking HP representative, Kimba. She assigned a repair # and shipped a return box which I received next morning. I packed the unit and returned it June 23rd. By this time the single pencil thin black line had developed into what looked like pencil scribble still about inch long and maybe half inch thick. June 26th Kimba called me to state that they now diagnose it as a cracked LCD that is not covered by warranty! I questioned where in the warranty LCD's were excluded. She had to go off the call to look that up, she returned after a long time on hold. She then stated that it was the accident, abuse, misuse section. I protested that none of that applied and the unit had sat in my house untouched other than normal use as a computer. She stuck to the company line and said that it would cost $400 to fix it! I was floored by that and told her that I would not pay $400 to fix a $600 item, ridiculous! This unit I feel had to be defective when I bought it, it never left the room I unpacked it in when it was received and the lines developed. A laptop is supposed to be able to be used as a portable device, this one hadn't left the room!

The unit was returned to me with the CID sticker firmly in the middle of the screen. I plan on notifying my consumer affairs office as I do not believe this product is "fit for the use intended" as required by law. I will also contact my credit card company with the same complaint.

Thanks to Stockjock for the detailed instructions, I also had not been able to find other than general instructions which did not apply to this model.

seriously, you guys should file a complaint with BBB. i'm sure that will get hp to be somewhat more helpful with their obvious defective product

They claim that they do not have to prove any thing and that if it's broken it's my fault period. No chance of defective screen or weak glass. I have gone thru every avenue including emails to CEO with no reply. Last HP product I will ever buy.

I have had the same problem. Just got off the phone talking to multiple executives. All a bunch of scam artists who were given instructions to dodge the issue at any cost. Initially we were told that the product was shipped from a different country so they will have ship it back to us and we send it to Europe from where it was shipped. Then we showed proof of purchase at HP's website. HP.com .
Then they changed the excuse to saying that it was caused by physical damage. There could a hundred reasons for the defective screen and they pick the one that's most convenient for them to drive away the customer. Here are the laptop details

Also I purchased the laptop using American Express. I just talked to the rep and he sounded very optimistic, very much in contrast with the HP mindless customer service representatives. He gave me a temporary credit for the amount. I was told it will take 6 to 8 weeks to resolve the issue. Any experiences on this board with American Express?

i think with certain credit cards from american express, you get additional warranty with the purchase.

nyhiem, try Laptop_Genuises on EBay, they have LCD for various HP models. I purchased one, after giving them specific model I had, and it was exactly same as the LCD taken out. Cost was $170.

BBB worked for me, I complained online thru their Palo Alto office which is where HP is headquartered. This was after I had been frustrated by HP's inaction and I had purchased an LCD from Laptop_Genuises and had it installed. To resolve the BBB complaint they notified me they would repair my unit. When I told them I had it repaired already they then notified me that they would reimburse me to satisfy the BBB complaint.

Whether or not anyone is successful with BBB I think people should complain if it only gets the message to HP to change their ways or face loss of consumer business.

My BBB complaint did contain a couple of links to forums including this one so anyone reading complaint could see what was going on, that I was not alone.

I have had success with other companies with BBB also. Companies join BBB as a positive statement in their ads, so they want to have complaints resolved.
