Need help planning workout and diet for GF.

My girl wants to get back into shape. Her friend just graduated with a degree in exercise science but isn't really helping her develop a plan. A diet and workout doesn't need to be complicated, I told her.

I can help her with the workout, but I don't want to steer her wrong on the diet. She is 5' 1" and weighs around 130lbs. I told her a few weeks ago that completely cutting sugars will help a ton, and she has been relatively good about that, but I want to get a good plan so she has something to stick with.

As far as her workout routine goes, I was thinking having her do a simple lift routine for "on" days, such as squats, bench, and deadlift (similar to the Rippetoe routine but not as intense). On off days, she would need to do some sort of cardio (running, jump rope, plyo, etc).

I really need some input here because she wants to do it, and I really want her to do it, and most importantly I'd like her to do it right.
