need help improving hand writing quality

How can I improve the quality of my hand writing in general? I try to get it neater, but it still sucks.. Also any tips on trying to write straight on unlined paper or other objects where there is nothing I can make reference to when I'm writing on it?

I had to write some 30digit thingy on a 12cm diameter polycarbonate round plate that has a hole in the middle and man the writing started and it slopes up and down.

One word: practice.

Hmm.. this reminds me that I really should practice writing with my left hand. It would be nice to be able to write with two hands at the same time 😀
Right now the handwriting of my left hand is still hovering around third-grade level 🙁

Seems to be a natural talent. I don't have it so I print everything. Looks good and people can read my writing...which is the real test of written legibility. 🙂

Apparantly thats not working. Do you have a special way to practice to improve my hand writing? Sh!tload of handwriting I have to do in school for hours a day doesn't help at all. I can stay on track because I use lined notebook paper, but its still sloppy..

Yup I agree... Practice does not help 🙁 Gawd my handwriting sucks... I think it's innate... Damn you people with nice handwriting and printing! Damn you ALL!!!!

Well, since writing is merely drawing certain shapes on a piece of paper, this involves the use of many tiny muscles, mostly in your hand, to perform the whole process. Practice is the only way.

haha Uberneuman, but be prepared for the lame "you're so cheesy for taking the time of doing that" response. I think it's five minutes well spent.

Elledan makes an interesting point - try drawing lessons.

My 12-yr-old son has serious dysgraphia, that is he can't write worth sh*t, and he's been through the whole range of therapy, drugs, practice, etc. Trust me, practice doesn't work.

How do children learn to write and draw? Through practice.
Why does not everyone reach the same level? Who knows. Sometimes it's clear why, but often it's a mystery.

<< how do girls have such perfect type-writer like handwriting, while guys tend to have chaotic one-letter-never-the-same type of writing? >>

Interesting observation.

I don''t think that this counts for all guys and girls, but it's certainly true in many cases. Perhaps something genetical? 🙂

My writing is pretty messy, but I think it's just a style I've developed since it's always consistent no matter what speed I write it. People say I have a doctor's handwriting.

I have pretty bad writing too. I think after you reach about 20 years old, your writing habits are pretty much set in stone. It would be pretty tough to try to improve for ME now (35).

ya i've never been able to improve my handwriting & i've really tried at various times. i've tried writing slower & more precisely, then trying to build my speed up to the same rate that i used to be able to writing in messy script. it just didn't work.

i'm not sure why girls can write so much more precisely; could just be a social influence thing. in grade school, i recall that it really was importatnt to them to write in neat, bubbly letters. though many of those girls outgrew it & now write in a more mature, but still neat script, those exagerated, loopy letters may have been the basis for developing better handwriting.

another observation of mine, that i think other artists here may also have noted is the difference between the drawing/painting styles (drawing moreso than painting) of males and females. women artists seem to sketch more "by algorithm" (more mechanically) than male artists, who have always appeared to have a more intuitive style of portraying a subject. IMO, this is to the man's advantage in earlier stages of training, while trying to achieve realism. however the common denominator of similar formal trainging undergone by both sexes after they've achieved a higher level of skill often evens the playing field.

anyway, yeah, i've considered that handwriting is just a form of drawing. but, considering that i can sketch very accurately and very quickly, AND that my handwriting is pretty pathetic, i think there are some other factors involved.

i propose that we of the Society of the Messy Hand try and write our letters more exageratedly (much as the girls in elementary school did). as we become more accustomed to that style, we can also refine it down to smaller letters & hopefully regain some of the speed we sacrificed when we converted to "girlie-script". oh yeah, and don't let any of your guy peers see you writing like that, or you may get beaten up on the playground for being a fairy😉.

good question Jerboy! i've been thinking about this for a while. i'm in college and, when a hot girl asks to see your notes, you wanna for her to be able to read them, right?

In grade school, I was one of the best artists in my classes. I got a lot of positive feedback on all of my drawings. (Unfortunately, I stopped drawing and never advanced beyond my gradeschool levels). Point being, my handwriting sucks now, and my handwriting sucked then. So I don't know if being an artist necessarily means you'll have good handwriting.

some people just have messy handwriting and some people just have neat handwriting. chances are, if the people who taught you to write had sloppy writing, your will be sloppy as well. you can try to improve it by breaking down your letters and examining them. take a sheet of paper and just write the alphabet on it-upper and lowercase-and try to use the same writing speed you usually do. don't try to do a good job, just write! then, go back a bit later and examine each letter. look for things like extra loops and squiggles and other things that really aren't necessary and then redraw that letter with the clutter removed. then, go practice that letter a few times and continue the process until you've worked through the alphabet. from there, just make a conscious effort of drawing all the letters your "new way" and take your time. if you do a lot of writing, within a few days, you may see improvement. as for writing straight on unlined paper, try taking a sheet of paper and practice drawing straight lines on it. then, whenever you need to write something on unlined paper, just visualize a straight line when writing.

A most detailed post, geekybear! I'm by no means an expert, but it does sound like a very good method to improve one's handwriting 😉

Blah, who needs hand writing. I type faster than I write. Hand writing actually is bad for me because I think even faster than I type.

<< Well i have terrible handwriting also, best thing i have to correct this is SLOW DOWN! >>

thats pretty much the right thing to do. My handwriting is terrible also and I´v found that improves 1000x times or more if I just slow down a little when I write.

My writing waves up and down unless there's a reference point like the lines on notebook paper.
