Hello all. Let me thank you in advance for your help. I recently purchased an Abit BE6-II MB, a celeron II 566, a GeForce 2, and a golden orb cooler. I am new to the overclocking world. My system runs fine when not overclocked. I purchased this processor because of the high success rate of hitting 850. I have the latest bios. When I bump it to the 100 Mhz bus to get 850 it will post and run for about 15 seconds. Just long enough to get into windows. Then it freezes. The chip is about a week old. Do I need to burn it in? Is it just a bad chip? I have some heatsink grease and non-overclocked it is running about 32ºC. Thanks for suggestions.

I think the voltage may have to be bumped up....

I see posting for 566@850 at 1.65 volts, 1.75 volts, 1.8 volts, etc..

where it yours set?

I tried upping the voltage to about 1.75. This was the highest I tried. What is still safe to go to? What is the highest I can go without frying my processor? Thanks for the input...

Everyone has a different definition of what is too high. I have mine a 1.9 volts for over a month now and it is completely stable and running cool. Check out my screen shot of MBM:

I think that as long as you have good cooling and your cpu temp stays reasonable then 1.9 is fine.

Have you set the PCI bus to 1/3 FSB and AGP bus to 2/3?
Default values (at 66FSB) are 1/2 and 1/1 so if you hadn't change the ratios you are trying to run at 50MHz PCI (!!!) and 100MHz AGP (!!!).

Yes, PCI is set to 1/3 and AGP to 2/3. I am going to try bumping the voltage up a little more in a few minutes. I'll let ya'll know. Thanks.

Thanks everyone. I thought I had tried voltage of 1.75 before, but I guess I had not. I tried it this time and have been running for about 30 minutes @850 Mhz. Thanks for all the help. I have had no problems yet. Thanks again.

To really test stability run it under heavy load (Prime95 torture test or 3DMark2000 looping demo) for a couple of hours. If it doesn't crash or lock up on you than you are set to go. If not, then bump the voltage up a little more and try again. Just remember to use a good HSF and thermal paste and monitor your temps.

Glad to hear you got it to 850. :)

I ran 3DMark2000 but I did not loop it. I was wondering if anyone can tell me where to find Prime 95. I would greatly appreciate it. It seems pretty stable at 1.75 volts at 850Mhz. Unfortunately, the BE6-II only goes up to 1.75 volts. I can not push it any higher as far as voltage is concerned. My cpu temp only got up to 35ºC. That golden orb seems to be working great. Thanks for all the help and suggestions.

You can get Prime95 here:

http://www.ocshoot.com/file/prime95.zip

I am also using a BE6-II with a Celeron 566@852.At first it was 100% stable only at 1.85V (I am testing stability with Prime95, if it doesn't crash in less than 5 minutes then there is no way that the system is going to ever crash).Time after time I was able to gradually decrease the voltage and now it is running 100% at 1.70V.What kind of slotcket are you using?I am using a MSI 6905 Master which has jumper settings to set voltage. When I set the voltage at 1.80V then this value becomes the default in BIOS and I get more options (up to 2.0V).

I didn't think about the voltage on the slocket. Right now I am using the Abit SlocketIII. I have the voltage set to auto on it. I am going to donwload it (Prime 95) when I get off work tonight and give it a run. Thanks.

You may also try CPU stability test:

http://www.tweakfiles.com/diagnostic/cpustabilitytest.html

It also stresses the CPU a lot and after half an hour it gives a grade for your system from 1/6 (unstable) to 6/6(Rock stable). And also CPUBurn:

http://users.ev1.net/~redelm/

With this program you are going to find out the maximum temperature your chip is going to run to.It usually gives about 8-10C than Prime95!And also contains BurnBX which tests your chipset, L1/L2 cache and RAM.

Good luck!

You might also want to consider testing the stability with RC5 while you're at it, and contribute to Team Anandtech :)

Your setup is very similar to mine. Anyway, I have a Celeron 566 running at 875.5MHz with a Gorb cooler too. 850MHz required 1.8V to be considered "stable" by me(not 100% stable, but then again with Win98 there's no such thing), and I'm currently running 875.5MHz with 1.85V, no crashes yet. Its been cracking RC5 for almost a day since my last reboot.

As for Slotket voltage, you'll be ok setting it to auto. I also set mine to auto and let the BH6 take care of the voltage. You might need to reflash the BIOS to get higher voltages though, I don't know what's the limit with the BE6-II.

I thought about the RC5 thing, but don't know a whole lot about it. I might do that within the next few days...
