depends where you lived, I interviewed for a tech job with Pfizer, basic desktop support no programming nothing serious. They were going to start me at $18 an hour which would have been $37k a year, within a year or 2 I would have been in the 45-50k range easy. This is in Southern California or course, but making 40k to start isn't unheard of.
