Need computer job

This question is for all you technophiles/computer careerists who know what you are talking about.

I am looking to change careers and get a job in computers. The only problem is that I don't know which job to go for. I live in Raleigh, North Carolina. For those of you who are familiar with Raleigh you will know that it is a high tech industry hot bed. It's basically Silicon Valley East. So there are a ton of computer jobs here. This will help keep my possiblilities open, etc.

Anyways I want a computer job that has the following criteria:

- Build/repair computers (hardware)
- Install/update/fix software
- Maintain systems/servers/websites
- NO training morons or holding hands
- NO exhaustive explanations about what I'm doing on a daily basis to boss/co-workers
- NO CODING
- Little responsibility
- High pay
- Entry level pay starts at 40k+
- Can reach 60k+ in short time

Is there a job for me? If so, what is it called and how do I get it? Do I need an Associates, Bacholers, Masters or just a diploma? Do I need certification? Etc. Etc.

Thanks in advance!

Maybe in maintaining servers but you don't have any experience in that do you.

I work at a data center building/maintaining servers... entry level with no experience is definitely sub-40K and going from even 40K to 60K in a short time period would require some pretty huge yearly raises.

also, exnay on the little responsibility part... a lot of times, sure, but if a server goes down, getting that thing back up is totally my responsibility (and I'll have clients, managed reps, project managers, and phone techs breathing down my neck till it is) not to mention getting called at odd hours of the night and expected to drop everything and come into work at a moments notice if anything really major ever goes down (like a total power loss/generator clusterfuck failure).

the OP makes it sound like he wants to work in one of those Geek Squade warehouse repair places, but the salary there is like lol as far as I know.

You need a wake up call.

No, but you reach the 30K- barely 40K area.

No coding is what kills you and not wanting to be support is what kills you.

Also,I really would not call NC Silicon Valley East.

I think you're taking the wrong approach... figure out what you enjoy doing first, not how much you want to make, how little responsibility you want, etc.

but the above comment is right... coding and support are pretty much the cornerstones of entry-level IT. this isn't the early 90's where you can take a basic understanding of java and parlay it into a 6-figure signing bonus with a .com

The highest I ever got paid for doing as little as possible was $20 an hour for this 30-hour/week internship, which involved surfing the web for researching and uploading stuff.

So, the job you are describing could exist as a full-time position.

That is an internship...and if that is all you did on your internship, that was a waste of one.

jr sysadmin would fit that description.

but first, you're not doin it in raleigh, you wanna get to CA or NY ideally.
the admins above you would handle all that pesky client services stuff and mgmt.

You'd just be the wage slave running around on unpaid overtime busting your hump and getting chewed out constantly for not knowing squat.

muahahaha.

but...60k starting is absolutely doable then.

Pretty much everything that you are willing to do is low paying. Everything you are trying to avoid is what makes a job higher paying. You'd be hard press to find anything other than being a technician at a retail computer chain or a local shop. This is my honest opinion.

There's no job in that.

EDIT: You can't be serious.

Maybe in maintaining servers but you don't have any experience in that do you.

I've got that job, in Iowa
