My 1999 Accord has developed some weird rhythmic noise from the wheels. I took it to my usual mechanic and he said the rear axle was bent and would cost about $225 to fix. I decided to get a second opinion and took it to another place and they tell me that the wheel bearing is shot in the front left wheel and that the front brakes are gone (which they decided to check because the brake light was on - the light that comes on when the *parking brake* is up  ) and that it needs an alignment and rotation - total = $825. How could two repair shops come up with completely different diagnoses?

Does anyone know of a reputable repair shop in or around Cary that can give me the best diagnosis and a fair estimate?

Where the hell is Cary? And no I'm not going to look in your profile to see if you have your state listed. Be specific.

There's a great place that I take my Acura to that's in the triad area. That might be a bit of a drive though.

Well, if you didn't even know where Cary was, you wouldn't be able to help me, would you? :p Seriously, though, it's in North Carolina, near Raleigh...near the Research Triangle Park...near Apex, where there was a chemical processing plant explosion last night.

goodoptics: That's what my wife says the mechanic told her.

Nobody knows any good mechanics in the RTP? :(

Ok, can someone at least tell me if the wheel bearing can get "shot" and if that alone would require about $600 to fix?

EDIT: The hub bearing removal & replacement was $150 labor + $72 parts approx. - not quite $600 (that was for other parts)
