Need advice on home speaker purchase

I currently have a pair of Polk LS50 floor standing speakers in front, a Polk center channel and M2's for the rear. My wife wants to do away with the LS50's because they take up too much room around my projection tv, and I need space for a stero cabinet.

It is powered by an older Onkyo Surround Sound receiver.

I have about $400 to spend on a subwoofer and two front bookshelf size. Is there anything for that price that can match my LS50's? I am not really an audiophile but want some decent sound. The room is 12' and 18' with the couch across the long portion of the room. Can the Polk PS250 give me good sound? I listened to it quickly at CC, but it was not set right and sounded pretty bad. I have heard Velodyne's that can shake but are probably too pricey.

Got any suggestions?

Bose.

Accouto-reflecto-bass-modjule, baby!

Paper and foam is everything you need and so much more!

Just kidding 😉

I'd post your question at Home Theater Forum - the ppl there are generally pretty knowledgable. From what I've read, Bose tends to be highly overrated - you can get much better speakers for what you pay for Bose.

Anyway, I'm not sure about your front mains - I know you typically want to get something that matches w/your center channel. But as far as a budget subwoofer goes, the Sony SA-WM40 generally is regarded as one of the best ones out there. It can be had for about $200 or less. Rated 4.62/5.00 at AudioReview.com with 267 comments. Other good "budget" subs are the JBL PB10 and PB12 (but those are well over $200 each), and PartsExpress.com sells a basic DLS 10" sub for around $100 that's gotten generally good reviews.

Sorry I can't be of much help...but hopefully gave you some places to look for your answers. 🙂

Well I don't know a great deal about polk, but from what I've heard they sound pretty good. I like AR's Acoustic Research's line up. I would get a pair of AR-15's and 10" sub should do fine. I have the S50's for fronts and s20's for rear and a S112PS (sub) with a PSC25 (center) I'm impressed that I shall never buy again.

For true surround you would want all the speakers to be the same except the sub of-course.

Get yourself another pair of m2's and a sub but Polk is expensive and 400 wouldn't get much.

Thanks for the replies. I had checked out Partsexpress as I used to build my own enclosures for my cars, but don't have the time anymore.

I found a Klipsch KSW10 sub for under $250 so I have a couple of options. I now have to find a store that I can compare.

Danj,

Thanks for the info on the speakers. If I could get away with a $150 or less sub, I have more for the speakers. I have read some reviews about stuffing polyfill to reduce the boominess.

I gotta run out to a store to check out the Sony sub, but have to finish my wireless setup to my neighbor's house and sheetrocking.

Anyone done this with the Logitech Z560's? They have way too much bass for my liking.
