The next couple Saturdays could be big money days for you. Saturdays are the busy day in retail. That's why they scheduled you. Just work and make money.

Like everyone says, stop bitching and straighten your priorities. And please, don't even try to compare school with actual work. Having a job is about 10x more stressful than going to school. You don't finish an assignment for a class, oh well make it up next time. You don't finish a project, you're canned.

10x more stressful? Sure your canned how about the fact you fail a class and your out of almost 3,000 bucks.

Sure, cause everyone is going nuts christmas shopping those sales employees will do good.

I can't believe you even got a retail job if you don't feel like working on Saturdays. There isn't many places around where Sat isn't the busiest day of the week. Today's youth....:disgust:

If u worked 12-16 shifts when did u go to school?

It's not like I work 12-16 hour shifts every day. Most of the time, this happens during the first two weeks of the quarter. That is when most students (we have 30k+ students) come and buy their books so this period of time is called "Rush". Most of us would have to work until 12am for the first week. Also, we had to work weekends like Saturdays, we still had to come in at 7am. As for classes for the first week, we will take off from work and go to classes and then come right back to work. So it was a non-stop process. I was promoted from a stocker (the lowest position) to the floor supervisor after working there for only 1 quarter, so you see, hard work pays off. People who worked with me and used to bitch and whine mostly stayed behind at their positions or even worse, got laid off because they can afford to look for cheaper and more hardworking students.

I dont want to be promoted to a "I was promoted from a stocker (the lowest position) to the floor supervisor after working there for only 1 quarter, so you see, hard work pays off." , to me school is very important becuz i dont want to end up as the Store Supervisor.

you're talking like my career is bookstore supervisor. That was my achievement at the bookstore that I worked. I have graduated since and was working at a high tech company as an engineer until recently when they had a layoff...also, from the way you write about your job, if I was your manager and I hear something like this from you, I'd probably make a note to myself that I can't rely on you. I think it is important to show that you are flexible when you are working. Also, when I was working my ass off at the bookstore, I have been getting As and Bs too....so it's just a matter of how you prioritize your time...maybe you may want to consider sleeping less on a Saturday...???

You better be prepared to work on weekends if you are ever going to work in the real world in whatever career that you're in. When I was interning at a high-tech company, I remember a few times that I worked until the wee hours of the mornings and the next morning, I had to go to class. Also, they had only budget for a full time intern (40hrs/week) and for me, I do not charge them additional hours so I practically worked for free maybe about 100 hours...that is why my manager likes me and respects me so much and hired me immediately right after I graduated. If you want to advance in your career, be prepared to make sacrifices, if you bitch and whine, it will only do damage to your career and lose respect among your peers.

<< damn I couldn't find one positive "advice"...

can't some of you "suck it up" and help him out instead of giving him a hard time?
>>

I helped him out. I'm sure he can talk to his boss and work out a better schedule. That Viper GTS assclown thought he'd be cute and try to act all grown up by saying the kid was unmotivated and all that. This forum is full of assclowns like that, who needs 'em.

If you think just because you Also go to class you shouldn't try to succed at whatever job you may have then you really need to wake up. Trust me Bust your ass at work, YOU have a job and with it comes responsibilty. I used to be involved in hiring Salemen when I sold cars, Now I am sure you are not aspiring to become a saleman but, We always looked closely at the guys that had suceeded in other jobs, IE Night manager @ Mcdonalds, SHift supervisor, and the like. There is now way a resume will tell me if you are smart, It can show that you may be more inclined to work hard and hussle. Employers would rather have some one who may not be as smart or gifted but will bust their butt and get the job done as opposed to someone who is really smart bu doesn't care.

As far as getting up Saturday mornings, You need to suck it up, If you deside that your sleeping in is more important than keeping a commitment you will have a hard time suceeding in just about any vocation you choose.

Actually that might be difficult in the retail environment during the busiest time of the year.

Let's review:
He applied for a job.
He stated he would work Saturday mornings.
He got hired.
The day after he starts he doesn't want to work Saturdays.

Now maybe his boss can work around this dilemma, but I really doubt if he will.

In the future just say "please respond only if you agree with me".

Here's why I responded as I did. You started your job yesterday. You said you could work on Saturday. It is the busiest shopping time of the year, and Saturdays are the busiest days. But you, on your second day of work, decide you don't want to work on Saturday because "I am not that kind of a person who will get up on a Saturday". I'm sorry, my friend, but that is lazy. It is unmotivated. Some of us said they will laugh at you if you ask not to work on Saturday, and I believe that is true. If I was in your position, I would want to know that it will look very bad for asking not to work on Saturday when you said you could.

To AntNYC and WickedMotorcar, you seem upset because no one told him how to get out of working Saturday. The fact is he might as well quit instead of asking. What do you think is better: (1) asking for the impossible, getting rejected, then having to work anyway while your boss thinks you're nuts; or (2) not asking, working anyway, and having your boss think you are dependable. The advice given was good.

This guy is a loser. He asked for advice and when we give him advice that his lazy ass thinks is too much to handle just try to blame us for giving him a hard time. If I was his manager and this is his attitude, he will be the first to go.

Most retail stores have certain shift hours, like the 9-5 shift, then the 5- close shift. I know best buy does that, so I doubt they would let you work 9-2. But there are exceptions, if you're a really good salesman, and your boss likes you, he probably would do that for you.

Well, the comment about "*Cry* I have to pay my own DSL bill*cry*" pretty much sums up the level of intelligence and laziness this kid has. :)

haha...I missed that part. This kid has no hope of achieving much with this kind of attitude.

When I was in college, I had to pay for:
- my rent (350)
- my utilities (40)
- my phone bills (30-100)
- my Cable connection (35)
- my food (varies by month)

and I have not even made any complaints about how tough it was. Admit it, you're soft and lazy. Get yourself psyched up for more hard work ahead of you, and you may have some hope!

just work the saturdays for now. in retail, the nights and weekends are the best times to get sales. personally, i think i'd rather work saturdays if i were in school anyway. you don't have to worry about classes as much on the weekends.

also, working hard, especially during inconvenient times shows dedication. it'll work wonders for your reputation in the future when you want to look for full time work, whether it be at circuit city or anywhere else. they'll give you good remarks when used as references, or they might be working at a new company in the future and recommend you!

i'd say just stick it out as long as you can. but 10 hours is a bit much for one day. ask them if you can reduce some hours on saturday and place those hours on a different day. hope that helps! good luck and tell us how work turns out for you.

you know what, even my girlfriend is tougher than you. She goes to 3 schools at the same quarter/semester (she had to get the classes that can fit her workshift at each school) and work 30 hrs a week...and she gets good grades too. She never complained to me about not wanting to wake up at 7-8am everyday!

I got a PM from our Mr Lazyass!

<Why do u think that ur the only one who had problems? why do u think u are better than me and how dare u insult my intelligence , if u were so smart u should have not responded any further when i clearly said FORGET IT. I think ur the stupid one who i never asked u to tell me if i am smart or not.
If u were such a grown up u would've realized this. LOX BLAM! >

this is funny. Did you wake up on Saturday to go to work? What has my response to your comment to do with my smartness, I like to insult people like you so that you will feel insulted to pick your lazy self up and work hard. You wanted to post on a forum, ask questions, so you will just have to accept our comments, otherwise, don't use a public place like this. If you can't take the heat, it only tells you that you're childish. Grow up, Circuit City boy!

It all comes down to how much you need the employment. Right now with the economy the way it is they'll likely laugh in your face if you try to change it. They know they can replace you in a heartbeat.

Now is not a good time to be lazy & unmotivated.

Viper GTS

What makes you think you know what they'll do. They can work out a schedule that works better for him. If they really need him to work on a Saturday, i'm sure he will. Maybe you're too lazy and unmotivated to realize that it took some motivation for this kid to get a job in the first place. I guess you like to bend over at work and have the managers f*ck you in the ass all the time too, huh?

Just tell em you can only work from 9 - 2, like you originally put on your paperwork. If they ask why, just say "personal reasons". Them just ignoring the hours you put down is pretty sleazy and makes me think the management doesn't care about their employees. But you can't just expect to get out of work on a Saturday because you don't wanna get out of bed. After all, you did tell them that you could work Saturday morning. Asking to change now looks like you aren't willing to honor your word.

Next time you apply for a job and they ask when you can work, put down 2pm - 9pm on Saturday er somethin. Suck it up, work your hours now, and consider this a lesson learned.
