If they've been attacked by a dog, yes.

I guess I needed to add the squirrel wasn't necessarily attacked. My dog was simply licking it and picking it up. Never snapped on it, growled, or was aggressive with it. She was trying to play, and obviously broke his spine when doing so. I feel horrible about it, but I feel even worse having said the dog attacked. All the dog did was just chase and play, and her behavior was too rough for the little guy. :(

Oh, then no harm intended. Accidents happen, now go give your dog some love. :)

They are on the couch sleeping right now. The boy dog never even messed with the squirrel.

BTW, I'm not so sure its a squirrel it might be some type of large rodent. Hard to tell with a bashed in skull. :(

what is wrong with your dog? my dog kills squirels in one quick bite. we try to stop him, but hes gotten a few in his 10 year old life. hes only 25 pounds too. not even a big dog. how does your dog injure a squirel without killing it?

She's just not violent I guess. She assumed it was a toy and was just "babying" it. That's what I call her toys. Babies. Because she will act like they are babies and carry them around and sleep with them in her arms. Obviously there's a difference between a squirrel and a stuffed animal toy... she just didn't know that.

And yeah -- it is bizarre because my friend's Jack Russell Terrier used to kill like 20 a year and she only weighed less than 20 lbs...

My dog is over 45 and very muscular.

you don't own a shovel or hatchet or something? altho the mental picture of you weilding a branch like a staff is uh. yeah. you live in alabama man, you should have lots of destructive things just laying around.

I honestly don't. I don't have a shovel because I never dig or buy anything. All my tools are hand tools for working on a car, home repairs and things of that nature. I had some really big rocks in the backyard (boundary of my nature areas), but I didn't want to cover one in blood and then have the dogs going apesh1t afterword. I'd have shot it but a 9mm is way overkill and way too loud.

I remember when my sister was quite young (like 8 years old) and accidently stood on the head of one of her guinae pigs. It was whimpering and clear fluid was leaking out of its ears. Dad and Mom weren't there, so she got a spade and smashed it on the head to put it out of its misery (even tho she was crying her eyes out). In hindsight it was brave of her to do that, I spose, not sure if I would have done that at that age.

Wow - that was brave for a little girl

:(

Have you contacted your vet, yet? I just wondering about what your dog could catch from the squirrel.

You feel empathy for the little guy, but you leave him in the yard to suffer while you get on ATOT for consultation.

I remember reading plans for a squirrel trap a few years ago.

If involved a 100,000 volt taser($15 ebay) being attached to wire mesh. with the center removed. Where the center is removed a metal lid was placed with squirrel bait(you pick) then one lead of the taser was attached to the wire mesh and the other to the bait lid. When the squirrel stepped on the wire mesh and took a bite he would complete the circuit. Resulting in a Squirrel fireball..
***WARNING*** Have fire extinguisher on had as fireball squirrel can be fiore hazzards to trees and brush as well as your house.

Also this won't help the OP, but i thought it was relavent to the topic of killing squirrels fast.

They've got all their vaccinations, but that's not a bad idea.

I wouldn't worry about it too much if they have all their shots. My dog catches squirrels and eats them on a weekly basis.

I did the best I could. I was limited by not wanting to actually bash the damn thing's brains in. I really wanted to shoot it, but that just wasn't going to be a good idea. I had my reasons for posting. It took less than 10 seconds to do so, and I was on the phone asking if it was ok to use a firearm in county limits during that time.

Take a 2x4 and put it on its neck at the base of the skull and severe its spine, it will die pretty painlessly. THough most dogs usually have the shake instinct that does pretty much the same thing when they catch something they will hold it by the head and shake vigourously that is what they are doing.
