Need a subwoofer recomendation

I have JBL Studio Series 36II bookshelf speakers, they are great speakers, but lack bass (heh, they only have a 6" woofer). I was wondering what you guys would reccomend to compliment the speakers. Something thats inexpensive (under $500, more closer to $300 or below), and has good clean, bass. 8"-12" would be ideal, though I think a 10" would get the job done. In know that costco sells that $80 KLH, but it is crap. JBL?

On the otherhand, goodguys occasioanly has some nice Klipsch reference floor standing speakers on sale for 50% off, has dual 8" woofers, $375 for the pair, maybe worth getting those instead of a subwoofer for the JBL's? Should I look into some towers with bigger woofers (I do have the room for them)?

I was look at the makes of Hsu and SVS, they seem to get good reviews, but I don't know how they preform on music.

I've got a 12" Klipsch...I LOVE IT!

Very deep, rich, and pure sounding. I would recommend them 100%

Adire Audio Tempest, or Shiva subwoofer would fit the bill. the shiva is smaller and slightly less expensive.

All you will need to do is get about a 250 watt amplifier. (partsexpress.com) and build a box for the sub if you have wood working skills at all its easy to do. and will be one of the best sounding subs you could get for in your house) svs is really good but they are costly and tempest/shiva can give you almost all the performance.

I will recomend yo ugo with a SVS PCI+ sub, god damn they are amazing

if you dont wanna spend that much, the Klipsch KSW-10 and KSW-12 are both nice downfireing subs

like everyone else said, depends on how much you wanna spend.

i have the 'Tiny Mighty' Dayton 10", and it fits the bill (for now). it was ~ $110 delivered and does a DAMN fine job of putting out clean bass down to about 25 Hz. Granted, I could have spent $300-$500 and gotten a much nicer sub, but this fit my budget and my needs (first real HT setup).

All of the previous posters have mentioned some really good subs - I'd head over to the AVS Forums and/or HomeTheaterForum and start reading - you could read those two sites for 8 hours a day for a year and still be learning stuff at the end...

I have the JBL 12" sub and I think it's pretty good. SVS makes some GREAT subs, so I would always recommend that to anyone who is looking for subs. Now if you could find a full-range speaker in your price range that would be the way to go for music (IMO).

I'll second the recommendation re: avsforum and hometheaterforum. I'm there everyday and it's got some great info.

my svs 25-31 pci does very well for music. its a very nice sub.

For your price range, Paradigm performance series subs are pretty good. Get the one with 12-inch woofer.

Another tip is to check the sub design (sealed, ported,...) and see how it goes with your the room. Ported subs usually needs to be a certain distance away from the wall, otherwise the sound become muddied which very bad for music listening.

I was pricing out a DIY sub from partsexpress.com and it would be about $212 in parts, the 250w amp, the 10" dayton series II driver (although the MKIII looks really nice), and the 2lbs speaker fill. Then i'd have to buy wood to build an enclosure. Plus shipping on the parts.

10" seems like it'd fit the bill....I don't mind building my own sub, it'd give me somethign to do on the weekends, however, if I can find comparable performance prebuilt and with a warranty, to me that'd be better.

Go Klipsch. They rock! They're a good bang for the buck and they last a long time.

I know everybody has their own brand preference, so you probably should just go to some different demo rooms or something and just see what sounds best to you.

Not that I'm against them or anything, don't get me wrong. I just couldn't pony up the money for a B4+ and got a rather...nice...deal on a DD12. So I guess I have to support my own team
