I guess I get no stinkin' love around here. So the consensus is that Crantang is a fool for towing her car? That sucks. In any case, would anyone know of some affordable car rental places or coupons of such flying around?

Thanks!

Requirements for travel on Auto Train

Amtrak's Auto Train travels non-stop between Lorton, Virginia (LOR) and Sanford, Florida (SFA). There are no intermediate stops.

To book an Auto Train reservation:
· Click the reservations link on the left.
· Enter your Departure Station (LOR or SFA)
· Enter your Destination Station (LOR or SFA)
· Enter your travel dates and the number of passengers

You will be guided through the booking process including adding your vehicle type (required) and accommodations, if desired. When traveling on Amtrak?s Auto train, you (and your party, if applicable) must travel with an automobile, van, SUV or motorcycle.

Be sure your vehicle meets these following conditions. Not all vehicles can be accommodated on Auto Train. Further conditions may apply. If you have any questions about special Auto Train requirements, call 1-800-USA-RAIL for more information.

Autos must have 4 inches of ground clearance and must not exceed 65 inches in height.
Space is limited for oversized vehicles such as vans and SUVs; these spaces must be specifically reserved in advance. Maxium height allowable for oversized vehicles is 85 inches.
We cannot carry automobiles with temporary luggage racks or bicycle racks, or with luggage packed or bicycles loaded on the roof. Empty factory-installed racks are acceptable if they are within the specified height limit.
Limited space is available to transport motorcycles. Only standard, factory-model two-wheel motorcycles can be accepted. We cannot carry motorcycles with side cars. Passengers assist in securing and removing their motorcycles.
Motorcycles must have a minimum of 5 inches clearance between the lowest portion of the frame and the bottom of the tires.
Auto Train does not offer checked baggage service. Passengers may carry an overnight bag on board - include any medications. All other baggage may be packed inside your automobile. We suggest that you lock items in the trunk of your car or in the glove compartment and retain the key. Passengers do not have access to their vehicles while they are on the train.
Even though departure is scheduled for 4:00 p.m., you must arrive early. No oversized vehicles or motorcycles are accepted after 2:00 p.m., and no cars are accepted after 3:00 p.m. Please note that traffic delays are common in the Washington, DC area en route to the Lorton, Virginia station.

Sorry but I just don't get it, you don't want to move your car for 700-800 miles so you have more of it? Eeeeehhhm OK!

I just want to lay out my reasons here before you bash me for being "unhelpful":

1: A cars mechanicals wear out MUCH faster when doing short drives. A long haul like this is much easier on the engine / drivetrain than driving around town for the day and stopping every few miles to go to a store!
2: 800 miles in the great scheme of things is nothing! If my rather limited experience with Toyotas is anything to go by, that car will still be driving with way over 100.000 miles on the clock! Those 800 miles will then equate to just 0,8% of total car use - IN THE WORST CASE-. Just think about it: you are going to get just 2-3 gas fillings more by loading up the car on a trailer.
3: The cost of renting a flatbed ONE WAY would be huge in comparison to the actual loss of value of the car due to moving it that distance and the costs for doing the maintanance on it in preparation for the trip (gas, oil, oil filter, air filter).
4: In most older cars that have 200.000 miles on the clock, the mechanicals are still OK. It's the small stuff that makes problems at an old age: Interior fabrics worn out, comfort accessories not working anymore (AC, power windows/mirrors). Most of this stuff causes problems in ANY older car, doesn't matter if it has been driven much or not.

BUT: If it is available and reasonably priced I would also consider loading the car onto a train and let myself be driven to my destination. This would have nothing to do with the wear and tear of my car but just simple laziness. Otherwise I would just drive myself.

EDIT: hmm that train deal looks very good for 1/3 of the price of a rental Truck, definately worth considering!

I can see not wanting to drive 800 miles if you had a stinkin' Ferrari or something, but sheesh.

In a word... YES!

Why?! What else should I do? Strap the Celica to my back and walk there... or load it as airplane cargo? Come on, I don't have very many choices here. And I don't want to drive it, because the tires are balding and I don't think it's going to last much longer.... plus I don't want to over heat my car and kill the mileage! You must not LOVE your car.

for the money you will spend on a flat bed truck you could buy new tires, and spend some more on slimjims and mountain dew.

If you want a truck with a car carrier, try Penske. They give you a 10% discount for ordering on the web and an extra 10% (not too sure about this) if you have AAA. I just rented a truck from them last week. They give you 4 days to use the truck for a one way move. If you order early enough, its much cheaper than waiting until the last minute. The truck was great, no problems at all. Be warned that they do not recommend driving faster than 45 when towing a car.

Okay maybe you guys misunderstood me. I don't want a rental truck like 14' rental truck. I want like a Chevy Suburban or Dodge Ram or some SUV that has towing capacty, that is all. Thank you Caveman for the quote, but that is not going to help me. I asked WHERE should I get a truck, not WHY or WHY NOT I should drive/tow. Thanks for all your wisdom though.

You are crazy for trying to tow your car there.

It will cost a fortune.
It will be dangerous, or at least CONSIDERABLY more dangerous than driving the car there.
It will cost a fortune.
It will cost a fortune.

The funny thing that no one picked up on is that you want to haul your car ONE WAY. That means that the location where you rent this mythical "truck" you're talking about is 800 miles away from the location you want to return it. That is extremely inconvenient for any rental agency, which is why they are going to charge you an insane amount of money for the privledge of relocating their car.

PS, an 800 mile drive is absolutely nothing. Unless your car is a total POS you should just do it.

Otherwise, you should go to amtrak.com and read about the auto train. Amusingly, it is almost perfect for you. There is only one and it is practically exactly where you need it to be. You will put your car on the train in Sanford, FL and it will arrive in VA. The trip is overnight, you get on at 3pm and you get off at 10am. You sleep on the train and your car does too.

Note, I did this twice. The first time everything was fine. The second time, it looked like they completely missed one of the loading ramps with my car, there was a big gash behind the tire on the frame under the car. So your miliage may vary. However, I got an estimate of $700 to repair it and Amtrak sent me a check right away. Oh, and last summer a whole trainload of cars derailed. I hope those people also got checks right away, but ???

But other than that, it's your only real alternative to driving. If you can find a sale fare it should be about $300-$400 for you and your car. That is MUCH MUCH cheaper than it will cost you to somehow tow it there, and it's very convenient... as long as they don't destroy your car.

If anything, an smooth 800 mile drive will do some GOOD for your car rather than damage it.

Hell, i'm putting on 1,500km this weekend just to go camping! :)

crantang, towing a car with a trailer is hard work. If you're inexperianced in maneuvering a trailer or likely to forget its there, its much much worse. We used to tow MGBs with an S10 Blazer, then we upgraded to a half-ton chevy. Even now our 3/4 ton chevy (we've since hauled much more than little Bs) handles SO much differntly than without a trailer. If this is your first time hauling, I'd reccomend having someone do it for you. Most places charge $1/mile unloaded, $2/mile loaded. It might cost a lot, but it will be a lot less than replacing the car, trailer and truck, plus whatever you destroy if you wreck them.

Also, if your only going 800 miles, just drive. It'll hardly wear the car at all. Highway miles are unbeliveably easy on a car, espically newer ones. (You should hear those little Bs on the highway...)

Umm.... unless I misread caveman's quote, he gave you a "WHERE" to rent a truck. He also pointed you in the direction of a (less expensive) alternative in taking Amtrak's auto train from FL to VA. It'll save you from having to put the mileage on the car, and it'll be much cheaper than the nearly $1000 quoted for renting a truck.

Well if you can't help, why don't you just shut up and move on. No one asked what you thought. And if I may be honest, you are stupid for telling me that you can't help. Maybe you just want another tick on your count so you can become a double lifer. Great aspiration there.

OKAY THAT IS ENOUGH. I NEED HELP FINDING A TRUCK AND A DOLLY, OR A WAY TO TRANSPORT MY CAR. I DID NOT ASK IF YOU THINK I HAVE GREAT IDEAS OR IF I'M SPENDING TOO MUCH MONEY. MAYBE SOME OF YOU SHOULD BE ACCOUNTANTS OR PERSONAL FINANCIAL ASSISTANTS FOR SOMEONE WHO NEEDS ONE. IF YOU DON'T HAVE ANY HELP THEN PLEASE JUST GO AWAY.

IF YOU'RE SO SET ON RENTING A TRUCK, THEN WHY NOT CALL SOME PLACES THAT RENT TRUCKS (RYDER, PENSKE, UHAUL) AND GET SOME QUOTES. DO YOU EXPECT US TO PULL NUMBERS OUT OF THIN AIR?

We were just trying to enlighten you to the fact that 800 miles is not going to make or break your car. Not now, not in another 10,000 miles.

Go cop your attitude somewhere else. :disgust:

I don't expect anyone to pull numbers out of their pockets or anything. There are a lot of people on this board, and I was hoping that I could get advice about renting... mainly who to rent from, who to stay away from, who offers the best rates... and so forth. Everyone on here just seems to have the "I'm cooler than you and know smarter than you look at me attitude."

Hey fvck you buddy. You are the one being an asshole to US. Some people here GAVE you places to look, or gave you quotes yet that is not enough. People are NOT going to do your fvcking work for you when they think it is a silly and moronic idea. Ever heard of the phone book? Why don't you call around, because people here are not going to do your fvcking work for you, dumbass. Stop being so lazy, and actually HANDLE something yourself for once.

What? All your post counts tell me is that you are a loser and all you do is make friends on the internet. I feel threatened by your post count? Oh puhleeze. I only developed an attitude when others started to chastise and make fun of me to tow my car instead of drive it. I never said that the information was not helpful. I was just getting information that I didn't really ask for. And don't talk about my attitude. You're the one who is so offended that you feel like you have to curse. Who's got attitude now loser?
