- Need a plausible excuse to beat a speeding ticket

1) Go to court and plead guilty
2) Tell them you will send them a $50,000.00 money order to pay for the ticket
3) Ask them to reimburse the difference
4) Move to Nigeria with the proceeds

I didn't read the thread...but get a deferred ajudification (sp?) if you can get do defensive driving. It takes the ticket off your record if you pay the fine (plus may a little more) and keep a clean driving record for the next x months. I think mine was four or five months.

talk to the trooper before the proceeding about pleading guilty to the top end of 5-7 over (check state insurance point spreads)

Well, now all of you can say I got what I deserved.

I didn't want to say something retarded like "it was my cruise controls fault, etc" They've heard it all before and would get pissed with crap like that. Went in, very quick. The trooper asked me "why do you think you weren't' speeding?" I made up some weak argument like 'if I was going that fast I would of gotten to the next light a lot sooner than I usually do, and did at the time.' So the $230 fine was knocked down to $100. But, I still think it means I got points!! Whoopee, someone just punch me in the groin a few times while we are at it!!

I could appeal today's ruling, but I think I have a weak case and it would be a waste of time...

I would have been more worried about the points. I would have made it a point that thats the only reason you were there. I wouldn't have made any excuses as to why you were speeding, that would only make you look kinda whiny.

"Sorry officer .. I didn't know I couldn't do that."

Oh, and here at ATOT speeding is right up there with murder. Good luck. Best you can hope for is just begging the judge for mercy as its your first ticket and get the points reduced.

You want an honest opinion if you're not willing to pay for a lawyer? Show up to court and take a gamble that the prosecutor will do a plea bargain. Both excuses are poor and can easily be torn apart.

That's all the hope you have.

This. A friend of mine is a cop in MASS and he gets the fun job of spending 8 hrs a day in court for stuff like this. He has told me that he hates it when people try to get out of things without taking responsibility.

Try to get a minute alone with him/her before your hearing and ask to plead no contest in lieu of the magistrate withholding adjudication (you still pay the fine but don't get any points) and if your record is clean (like you say), you will likely get it accepted.

 "I felt I was going no more than 40." I was going 63, but I felt that I was going 40. Damn hippies with your "feelings."

63 in a 40? What is it with you people? 5 to 10 over they'll let slide, but more than 20 over. That's just stupid.

Agreed. There is no excuse for driving like an idiot.

Look into whether your state offers deferred judgement (pay the fine, but it doesn't go on your record unless you get another ticket in a certain amount of time) or traffic school (to keep the ticket off your record). Like you said, it's not the fine that's a big deal, it's the insurance hike.

When I was out of town one time I told the cop that I was just following my friend. I acted surprised that he didn't pull him over instead of me, and I told him that my friend was driving way too fast but I had to keep up with him because I'm in an unfamiliar place and didn't know where I was going.

It got me a verbal warning.
