- Need a plausible excuse to beat a speeding ticket

thatsright

Diamond Member
Of course I was speeding people. I'm not going to even pretend otherwise. Was going 63 in a 40mph @ 6:30 am (thus, not really any traffic.) At this point, I seriously don't mind paying the $230 ticket...but whats going to kill me are the surcharges for the next 7 years!!

I have appealed the ticket and my hearing is next Friday. I'm not going to get into the super hail marry stuff like questioning 'when was the last time the radar gun was calibrated. The only two excuses I have thought of:

1-"well there was a Toyota tundra coming up beside me really fast before I got pulled over and I believe I was pulled over by mistake." Problem: Borderline insulting the magistrates intelligence.
Or
2-"I had cruise control on and felt I was going no more than 40." Problem: The magistrate will say 'if you had cruise control on, its your responsibility to monitor it...."

The (mass state) trooper told me to appeal if its my first ever speeding ticket-which it is. "You'll just get a $100 fine." When he pulled me over I was polite, but at no point said anything incriminating. Anyway....

I'm just looking for a realistic, somewhat plausible reason for the magistrate to take some pity on this pathetic speeder!! Help guys!

Too funny. You really think that if you have an excuse, the law won't apply to you. LOL.

Get a lawyer. They will almost guarantee you get off. It won't be because of an excuse though.

"Your honor, I present my first bit of evidence, The people of ATOT have given me an infallible argument ..."

You broke the law, you knew you where breaking the law, you tell us that you are breaking the law. Guess what, you deserve to be punished.

Tell the judge you would have a tough time making full payment, ask for a smaller fine, but that's all. You lost all entitlement to innocence once you where caught.

Seriously, if you don't want a speeding ticket, and can't afford one. Then why the heck where you speeding in the first place? It is more dangerous to drive fast, it costs more gas money, and ultimately it doesn't save huge amounts of time.

The speeding ticket fee 'I don't mind.' Its the thousands of dollars over the next 7 years my insurance will charge me, thats what kills me. And the person who suggested getting a lawyer, that will certainly cost me more than whatever surcharge will cost over the next few years.

Come on now, should I just lay down like a lamb on the tracks and get run over by the train? Its my god given American duty to try and weasel out of this baby....

I thought traffic lawyers were only a few hundred (read $500)? Never needed one though.

Yes, yes you should just lay down. As I said before, if you didn't want to pay the money then you shouldn't have been speeding in the first place. You have no American right to break the law and potentially endanger others.

I feel no sympathy or pity for you. Maybe next time you will think before you go 23 mph over the speed limit.

Don't do the crime if you can't do the time. You should have thought about 7 years of getting reamed out by the insurance company BEFORE being a dumbass.

I tell you what, go in with an excuse. Last time I was in traffic court a dumbass 17 y/o tried that. The judge made his ticket HIGHER. I about laughed my ass off. There is no excuse. The law is the law.

BTW - Welcome to the real world. Speeding has more consequences than just the ticket. The reason your insurance is going up is that you just showed you are a higher risk than your average dumbass.

Uhh....plead guilty, ask to pay a slightly increased fine in exchange for the ticket not being put on your record as it is your first offense.

You want an honest opinion if you're not willing to pay for a lawyer? Show up to court and take a gamble that the prosecutor will do a plea bargain. Both excuses are poor and can easily be torn apart.

That's all the hope you have.

"Your honor, to be fair, the sign was a bit misleading. I thought it was a minimum speed limit sign and not a maximum speed limit sign."

I dont think you will get surcharged for 7 years if its your first ticket. 7 years is certainly an exaggeration. (In NJ you dont get surcharged by the DMV until you hit 6 points within 3 years.)

And if it is indeed your first, go to the court hearing and speak to the prosecutor. Explain to him this is your first violation and he will probably knock it down to a non point violation with a little heavier fine.

Try using an excuse, and you are certain to get the points and the fine. The court has heard every excuse in the book and doesn't like hearing them.

Oh, and SLOW DOWN.

In washington you can get what's called a deferral... If you haven't gotten one in 7 years, then you can get one. It basically puts the ticket on hold, and as long as you don't get another ticket within 1 year, the existing ticket never goes on your record. You just have to pay a fee.
You should check if your state has something like that.

Defective equipment. Negotiate with the the prosecution and just say "I'll plead guilty to defective equipment and pay my fines/court fees before I leave the court house if we make this quick."

I've done this 3 times. And the "thousands of dollars in insurance premiums over the next 5 years" are not true from a single speeding ticket. If you insurance will raise your premiums that much then get other insurance.
