Need a new mattress

I need a new mattress and was thinking of just getting a cheap $200-300 unit off of Amazon, but I've been doing some research and am starting to lean towards getting something slightly better.

There seem to be a lot of sketchy review sites for these new online mattress dealers (Leesa/Yogabed/Saatva/etc/etc) and it makes me feel like they could be a scam. All are priced around the same, they all seem to have similar websites, and all seem to be pushed heavily by these mattress review sites that, surprise, surprise, receive kickbacks for referrals and coincidentally give nearly all of them rave reviews. What is weird is that these mattress review sites seem very similar too.

Does anyone have any experience with these online vendors or have any recommendations? If I spring for an "expensive" mattress it would have to be somewhere in the $800 range. I'm also not sure I want to go with memory foam like a lot of these vendors use and would probably lean more towards an spring mattress (I want something somewhat bouncy and responsive) like Saatva offers.

Do you have a CostCo account? We tried a Casper and my wife hated it, and we tried a Leesa and my wife hated it, but she loves our cheap CostCo memory foam mattress.

I have experience with Casper, and it's a pretty good mattress for me. Took a bit of time to break in, but it's pretty good now. The biggest perk with most of these companies is the 100 day trial period. Just check reviews about the companies and you should be fine. Casper was one of the first to get popular, and I'll probably get one again depending on how long this lasts. I went with them because of a sale at the time, and people's opinions that there was no BS pulled with the 100 day trial... if you don't like it then it's supposedly quite easy to return. (as easy as a giant foam mattress would be anyway)

They changed their design in March so it's different now compared to when I bought it (I guess it's softer now) so I can't say how it is now, but IMO it beats paying more for a spring mattress. I've had problems finding a good spring mattress anyway which is why I got the Casper.

That doesn't say anything. There is a huge range of mattresses. I like eurotop firm which is a memory foam layer on top of firm springs.

I'm tempted by the ease of ordering it, but I've hated every foam/foam topped mattress I've tried due to heat and sagging.

Costco if you want local.

But I would recommend to go one step firmer than you think you want. Most mattress will break in/soften up after a month or so. So get one on the firmer side so it will hold up better/last longer.
Look at the coil gauge (lower number is better) and how many coils it has (higher is better).

No, I don't have a Costco account but one just opening up in the area (it will be 10 minutes from my new abode) and I've been considering joining. I checked their website and they do have several mattresses in the price range that look pretty decent but they are saying delivery takes 2-4 weeks. I don't know if I can wait that long. =(

You don't need a Costco Acct to buy from Costco online.
Mattress is delivered white glove service.

I'd suggest one that is easy to return and that you can try out. No one can tell you which mattress you will like besides you and a 5 minute try in the store doesn't cut it.

I sleep soundly on my Casper Mattress. I was reluctant to spend that much money but a lot of rich evil conservative talk show host said it was a great mattress. When my son came to live with me, I purchased one for him also.

Spent about $500 on an Ikea foam/wool mattress maybe 4 years ago? Zero sag, not overly warm and does not need a box-spring either. I've spent over three times as much in the past and not been as happy.

Having said that, ymmv and you really do need to try out a few for yourself.

Buying a mattress is a crap shoot. What works for millions may not work for you, so you have to expect to return one or two, if not more.

Since last January, I bought-and-returned 4 mattresses, but then, my back is finicky. And because of that, for me, any shop that allowed easy returns was gold; so Costco was a great option, albeit I ended up buying from Mattress Firm.

Whatever you do, don't buy the cheapest, or near it. Every $100 more gets you certain options that make the mattress slightly better: the springs of the $300 are thin, and sparse; the $600 one will be twice as better, but the mattress top might be a bit hot to sleep on; a couple of C-notes more will fix that, but you might not see the real soft, downy comfort till you move up further still.

That said, $800 is a nice sweet spot for mattresses; and even better if you can shop around or wait for a long weekend for a nice sale, bringing a $1200 one to within your range.

If you are one of those lucky ones who sleep well on all mattresses (test case, hotel beds), then your search is gonna be easy; if not, you need to do some research: http://www.sleeplikethedead.com/bed-mattress-review-home.html is a great resource (but like I said earlier, don't expect their 'best' recommendation to be the best for you).

I have had one for a few weeks and really like it. It's not foam topped. There is foam support at the bottom and this gel type grid substance above it. I tend to sweat the bed and this has been the coolest sleep I've ever had.

It's 100 night trial so you can't lose really. If you don't like it, they give you a full refund and donate the mattress to charity.

i got a new mattress a month or so ago. i went from a $3000 (retail price, paid 1/2 of that) W hotel heavenly mattress to a ~$350 mattress on amazon. i couldn't be happier too.

i knew i liked the mattress though because we bought the queen version for our guest room and it was very comfortable. i need firmer mattresses now a day due to lower back disc issues. this new mattress has made a huge difference and now i don't wake up with back pain. previously i had it every morning, but it was also because the mattress was like 6 or 7 years old.
