I need a new mouse. Ive been using an intellimouse 1.0 for years:

http://mybenni.files.wordpress.com/2009/01/intellimouse_optical.jpg

Ive dominated FPS servers, RTS games and the occasional RPG game with this mouse. Ive never needed thousands of dpi to be any good at games but the intellimouse 1.0 has one fatal flaw, its not durable enough and over time develops a problem where the left button starts registering two clicks when pressed once. Ive been through 2 of these before and thats the 3rd one just developed that problem now, it messes up RTS games more than anything.

So i need a gaming mouse which i assume are more durable than normal mice. I tried the microsoft HABU a while back and it was pretty awful, it still tracked even when lifted right off the mouse pad (black steelseries one that actually is made of steel), i dunno if thats the HABU or laser mice in general but every optical mouse ive tried dosent track at all even when only lifted a tiny bit off the pad, which is what i want it to do!

So whats good? MX518 still great? I remember people raving about it a while ago and its optical.

The Logitech MX mice are great and very durable. I've had my MX510 for 3 years and it's still running strong. I had bought an OCZ Lazer Gaming mouse and it died after a year and went back to my MX510.

I've also used the Intellimouse until last year when I switched to the Logitech G9.

I think gaming mice are slightly overrated in general but picked up a Microsoft Sidewinder X8 and really like it. It was an upgrade from an Optical 3000 which I liked but died.

A few reasons why I like the X8:
- Very comfortable for my largish hands
- Extremely well designed dock w/ on the fly recharging capability
- Scroll wheel is a big upgrade from the Optical 3000 for me but might not be for everybody
- I didn't think I would like the DPI switching but I've ended up using it fairly often

I haven't tried a G5-G9 so I can't really compare it to that.

MX518, G5. Same shit.

For the most part, yes.

The main difference is the adjustable weight and scroll tilt on the G5 and the different exterior surfaces. The MX518 has a slick/glossy finish, whereas the G5 has a matte finish.

I own both and I prefer the G5 for gaming (I brought my MX518 to work), although the matte finish isn't as durable. My first G5's finish blistered and flaked off after a while. Logitech replaced it with the a new one, and while the finish is wearing away as well, it isn't blistering.

They both are really comfortable mice though.

I love my Razer Death Adder... course it's probably because I got it from Woot for $20 last year, hehe. Good, durable, quality mouse and, iirc, it has a decent amount of dpi and on the fly sensitivity adjustments (never really used it though). Best part about this mouse is that it works wonderfully well on the surface of my desk. I never have to worry about being limited to a mousepad because I just use my desk.

I've got the Death Adder and if you hold the mouse with just your fingers then it's fine. But if you palm the mouse and you've got big hands then it doesn't work so well. That's one of the reasons I'm switching to a Microsoft Sidewinder/X5.

I really like the razer diamondback. really smooth, nice weight, on the fly sensitivity, 7 buttons- the perfect number for an fps. no longer do i have to move my hands away from the asdf keys when I need to switch weapons and stuff.

My G5 has served me well. I never use the sensitivity toggle and it looks like ass, but otherwise very good mouse.

I can't understand why people are sticking with cable mice. Ick.

I never have a need for my mouse to leave my desk and it is easily within the reaching distance of a regular sized cable.

So, no recharging or chance of lag for me :)

I'm still using an MX1000. Haven't found a replacement that has as many buttons immediately available. Tried a razer lachesis for a bit, returned it though - wasn't anywhere near as nice as the mx1000.

Using a MX518 here. Logitech is pretty good at replacing mice if it breaks for some reason.

i could NEVER (seriously) be without any other mouse which has less than those two keys on the left, in any game i use the big side button to jump, and in WoW the smaller one for "drain soul" in addition to get my shards. (Warlock :) )

That's why i have my 3rd or 4rd mx518 already. Now...that razer naga looks tempting..but i need to try it first.

I love the MX Revolution. Had mine for two years but most of the finish has came off the right hand side (which I could not care less about) and one of the copper recharge contacts is starting to wear down (which I care about a lot!)

I find it perfect for gaming. As responsive as a cabled mouse (no perceptible wireless lag) and has a plethora of easy to access buttons (I use up to 6 buttons in any one game in addition to LMB and RMB) which with the Logitech Set Point software is as easy to set up for your games as any other basic PC task you perform daily.

Having not owned a "Gaming mouse" or MS518/G5 etc etc. I cannot compare my own personal opinion on the MS Revolution to anything. I can however state that it has never let me down in 2 years of heavy use with a battery that can last 2 days of heavy PC use (50% surfing/50% gaming) and all of the points I have highlighted above.

I have two G5s and I don't even know why. I actually find it to be a very uncomfortable body style. The side pinky groove doesn't feel right to me and my finger usually ends up straddling it awkwardly, which causes my hand to ache if I'm using the mouse for extended periods. People often recommend Logitechs for people with big hands, so maybe mine are just too small. I can't seem to train myself to hold the mouse differently.

Other than that though, the mouse tracks very well and I like the availability of DPI adjustment. Prior to my G5 I was using an Intellimouse Explorer, and I noticed a big improvement in my performance in FPS's especially when I moved to the G5.
