www.the-underdogs.org and do a search for "System Shock 2" (- quotes). It's a great FPS from 1999 but got little or no recognition. This game was the precursor to Thief (only u can actually kill people). The graphics are above average even for modern games, and this game will scare the crap out of u if u play it in a dark room. It also has the most developed plot I've seen in an FPS, but this is not a shooter game. It is action-packed, but the game is not about the action. It is now abandonware and is about 128 MB download.
Edit: Just to clarify, when I said the game is not about the action, I meant is isn't a mindless shooter like D3.
i just finished SS2 [by installing a dual-boot with Win98SE] and although it is a "classic" - imo it is no longer great if it were released today [since the games it inspired have finally surpassed it - mostly by ripping off its innovations].
it was an extraordinary game in '99, but the Dark Engine is rather dated even with the texture packs and the SS2 interface is 'clunky' . . . imo, DE surpassed it with better gameplay, gfx and interface. SS2 is a hybred - part RPG, part FPS . . . and i tended to find the enemy respawning endlessly rather tedious instead of 'scary' . . . you are also forced to specialize your character.
i'd love to see SS2 completely remade.
ANYway, IF you have Thief 2, dlwnload the newly released expansion pack:
TX2: Shadows of the Metal Age . . . although the gfx are about as dated as SS2's, this 13-mission Xpack is really as good as anything Looking Glass Studios released . . . a welcome addition to the Thief Series.
If you want "newer" gfx, consider DeuSex: IW and Thief - Deadly Shadows . . . both are worthy additions to thei respective series - BTW, Thief DS runs much smoother than DE:IW [incredible shadows and lighting plus "atmosphere"]
