however, nikons usually have a faster autodrive system than canon

While Im nitpicking, this isnt really true either. Nikon's AFS lenses are fast, but not *as* fast as canon's USM system. Even with a F5/D1 driving them. However, the difference is slight. Nikons AFS lenses are geared more towards pro/sumers and you might never use one so make sure you are happy with the AF speed of a normal Nikon lens if you get a lower end Nikon body. Its fine for most people but a bit slow for me.

I already have a manual nikon, the problem is that i need to get something that my mom can figure out, so i figured an auto zoom would be the best option.

I got the nikon F5 and the AFS lenses. At one time I had both the 80-200 AFS and normal 80-200 2 touch lens and the 2 touch lens was just as fast as the AFS lens.

I have the Nikon 401S (First Camera), Nikon F3, Nikon FM2 and A Nikon F100 with various nikon lenses.

My next camera will be a Nikon D100 (I've tried the D1H but that's too rich for me).

In my opinion you can't go wrong with Nikon :D

Hey, i want to thank you for the suggestions once again.

I ended up spending the extra money and getting the Nikon N65. I liked the feel and it has alot more features.

Thanks,

I got the nikon n65 myself. takes GREAT pictures. that's all i really know about cameras. tells you how easy the n65 is to use.

actually i also know that if i could have afforded it, i woulda bought the n80. but, no great loss, not for the pictures i shoot. :)

I was looking at a Minolta STsi ($269) or the Canon Rebel 2000 ($349). Both are the same in features but the Minolta is consistantly $75-$100 cheaper if you get them with a 28-80 lens. I haven't looked too closely at the Nikon's though, they seemed a little on the pricey side. But Ornery's link just proved me wrong, the N55 for $299 with a 28-80mm lens looks like a great deal.

Anyone know how to convince a wife that a ~$300 35mm SLR is better than a ~$200 point and shoot? I'm new at photography and I want to get a good camera that will last. But she doesn't want to spend $300 on a camera.

lucky - sorry for the confusion above. when i was referring to autodrive i meant the fps that each camera could shoot. it seems to me that below the pro model level, nikons tend to be about .5fps faster than canons. not a huge deal, but still a little faster. my coaches n80 seemed a little faster than my elan II when i was shooting pole vault.

amigaman - how to convince the wife? ive hear thats tough to do. a slr is not necessarily better than a point and shoot. depends on what youll use it for. i have both (digital point and shoot). sometimes i dont want to haul the slr along. but if you want to get into photography then slr is the only way to go. you have lens options, flash options, filters, ect...

it all depends on what you want to do with the camera. my slr was one of the best purchases ive ever made.

Anyone know of a couple good websites that review SLR cameras? I've been to photo.net and they have a lot of good info but I want more...
