Looking at a Nikon N55 right now, this my best option. I want autofocus and want to spend around 300...

Thanks,

I have kinda the same situation except I'm pretty well locked in pentax. Look at the others in this price catagory, check out rebal2000, pentax zx-l and maxum5 and hold them if possible and se which you like best, I really don't think in this price range you going to go wrong with any of these 4, so pick the one you like best.

I told my wife I wanted to sell my pentax zx-m and upgrade to auto focus, about a week later she had it sold for me, and she doesn't know anything about them:D. So I am getting a ZX-l, hopefully ordering tomorrow.

Check out the N60 or 65 by Nikon.

Personally I have the N80, an awesome camera, but expensive.

I've also heard good things about the pentax but, why not spend a little more for a nikon 65 or canon elan 7?

Also the pentax zx-l is 400, the n55 is 300, i believe the n65 is 400 as well. So i guess if i want to spend an extra 100 go with the better ones...

unless you already have a bunch of pentax lenses i'd suggest not going with them... they simply don't have the support nikon and canon have, it seems.

Well it all depends on what you want to shoot mate. As a general rule, in Nikon, the higher the number, the better the model.
But like I said, it depends on what you want to shoot.

The high-end canons are good...when I was camera shopping 4 years ago, I found that the canon in the price range I was looking at was pretty weak compared to the offerings from Nikkon and Pentax.

Here are some pics of the N80 I have

One
Two
Shown with two of my favourite lenses.

I'd personally get the N65, I have shot professionaly with it before, and it's a great camera for the price. The best part about Nikon is that their lenses simply own, and they fit most if not all Nikon camera bodies if you choose to upgrade. This rocks because you don't have to re-buy lenses. I have a small army of them, and they all work perfectly

I don't really personally like pentax and would only look at nikon and canon but thats just me :) For me I like Nikon because of the interchangability of lenses

I would have to agree to an extent. No model of Pentax camera has ever really wowed me in any way. As for Canon, you have to spend a ton of cash to get the goods. This is why Nikon rocks, they offer affordable cameras that simply perform excellent.

n55 has less features-and less price-than the n65, but the autofocus is brand new and substantially better.

Not really. in the low-end consumer market, canon probably has more features, but their bodies are built as "ruggedly" as the nikons. The nikons (sans the n55, havent touched it yet) are usually built around more metal and feel more reasurring to in my hands. However, the lower-end canons are substantially lighter and great for backpacking/travel.

And with lenses, its basically opposite what you write. Most canon lenses now have the USM, while you gotta shell out $$$ bucks for the equivilant on nikon.

As most Nikon lenses have the G/F lens functions, I fail to see your point. Their lenses are not all that pricey.

I'm surprised you can snag a Nikon body and lens for that $300.00 price, but apparently you can!

I hate like hell to buy used stuff, but I might make an exception where a 35mm SLR was concerned. I've got a Contax 137md sitting on a shelf, gathering dust, because nobody wants to use it. I use my camcorder or my wife uses her point and shoot instead. No, mine's not for sale, but many people are in the same situation. Awesome equipment for sale cheap at local camera shops. At least pay a visit and see what I mean...

im a canon fanboy, but i also like nikon. ive owned two canons and been incredibly pleased with them. a couple years ago i was trying to decide between canon and nikon for my new camera.

when it came down to deciding i liked the feel of the canon in my hand. the canon also allows me to do multiple exposures on the same frame, the nikon didnt. and i liked the menu setup for the canon better.

however, nikons usually have a faster autodrive system than canon. you can also use old nikkor lenses on the new nikons. handy feature.

id say you cant go wrong with either canon or nikon. both of them have far more support and accessory options than minolta and pentax.

you'll want a prime lens in the 120 to 150 range at least. baseball might be better with 200. don't get a zoom because it won't throw the background out of focus enough (your absolute aperature size will be small so lots of depth of field, not good for portraits)
