Death Note (TV) 3/10
The original was nearly as dense as a pure text mystery. Read it, instead of watching it.

Obviously, Cowboy Bebop. Occasionally, I go re-watch it, and you know, it's still awesome. Except the feng shui (sp) episode.

Also, if you like Bleach, check it out on paper. IMO, the story is average, but Kubo Tite's got serious talent when it comes black lines, and has page-turner techniques down as well as well as Grisham. I'd put Soul Eater in the same category, but with outstanding outlandish characters (Excalibur!). If you do considering picking up books, make a point to jump for Battle Angel Alita.

Good trips:
Gunbuster (watch before Gurren Lagann and FLCL, if possible)
Bubblegum Crisis
Desert Punk
He is My Master (WTF)
Project A-ko

Over the top:
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (concentrated epic awesomeness, dubs on Hulu)
FLCL (silliness with epic awesomeness topping)
Project A-ko (minor WTF)
Penguin Girl (WTF)
Dead Leaves (WTF, WTF, WTF...WTF?!)

Plain good:
Trigun
Cowboy Bebop
Evangelion
Ga-rei Zero (prequel to the comic)
Soul Eater
Ah! My Goddess (OVA only)
Armitage III (OVA version, terrible dub)
Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei
Big O

You guys dont understand its that my reading skills arnt up to par with what yours is. I cant mentally keep up. even reading a thread like this I have to read then reread it a few times to completely understand it. Ever since I was a child I have had problems reading I had to work twice as hard in english to get the same result that the other kids have. My daughter is having the same issue. I can read fine its just I dont comprehend it the first few times through. Trust me I wish I did I would be all over subbed I heard from multi people they are much better.

if you do end up watching a lot of anime, you will pick up on most of the common phrases, and thus not need to 'read' the subtitles so much.

furthermore, dubs are almost always worse than the original. normally, japanese voice actors are just much better, and a lot of things get lost in translation, particularly humor and/or cultural references. A lot of things that don't sound as silly in japanese sounds awkward and positively ludicrous in english.

not to mention how incredibly limited you are in selection.

I haven't picked up much at all. Instead, I've gotten to where I can hallucinate the voice actors speaking in English, once I start getting into it, as if the subs weren't even there.

Handy for foreign live action films, too, which is where is you really find the bottom of the barrel in audio, if you don't go with native+subs.

Still, if the OP needs a dub...that's about all there is to it. Very little that is available doesn't have dubs, though most aren't good, and it actually tends to be harder to get the Japanese and subs. <rant>Audio isn't that big, nor are subs, so why, why, why, US lincensees?! I'd rather watch original w/ subs for any foreign language video, dammit!</rant>

Hmm didn't they replace the music in First Stage or something like that? I know they renamed the characters... Takumi is Tak, Itsuki is Iggy, Iketani is Cole, Ryousuke is Ry, etc.

Do you mean hard to follow during the races? There really isn't much going on in them unless someone uses some crazy driving technique. It's usually just Ryousuke talking about technical stuff to whoever is near him haha.

Hmm, I checked Manga Reader for Bowling King and I can't seem to find it on there. I think I lost the manga when one of my hard drives crashed :(.

Apparently, it's also a Taiwanese manga, and you can get it from NULL off a XDCC bot:

http://www.n-u-l-l.net/?a=bots-view&i=4&d=7

The version I'm watching, they kept all of the original names. It's weird hearing an american voice actor say a japanese name, but I'm glad they did so. As for hard to follow, to the pages have a bad flow for me. maybe i need to give it another chance since it's been a while since i've looked at that series in written form.

Thanks for the link I'll check it out and let you know what I think of it.

Edit* for those of you recommending subbed over dubbed, the issue was explained later in the thread as to why the need.

The first half of death note was a 10. The 2nd half was closer to a 4.

It's broken up into 3 parts so I'd have to say the first 2/3 were 10 and then it just gets worse and then ends in a terrible way... but it's worth watching for the first parts.

Yeah, words like "kimochi" and "moto" will practically be like second nature! Wait a minute... what sort of anime am I watching!?

Also, if you like Bleach, check it out on paper. IMO, the story is average, but Kubo Tite's got serious talent when it comes black lines, and has page-turner techniques down as well as well as Grisham.

If only he was good at keeping up a decent story :p.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (concentrated epic awesomeness, dubs on Hulu)

Gurren Lagann is one of those series where I recommend not watching the entire thing. The second half was just awful compared to the first.
After they defeated Lordgenome, it just went too over-the-top with throwing galaxies like shuriken.

Most animes keep the original names when dubbed, which is why people were pissed when they tried to "Americanize" Initial D. I think they thought they could follow off the popularity of Fast and the Furious. Silly people... there's no drag racing in Initial D!

There's also a live action (Chinese) Initial D movie if you're really curious. It's not that great though.

Thanks for the link I'll check it out and let you know what I think of it.

I actually went and got it all myself as well! I think I stopped after volume 12 or so, but that's when I stopped reading a lot of manga, so I wouldn't take that as a negative thing about the series. I mostly only read the big shounen 3 and Fairy Tail now :\.

How is this? I tried getting into but at that time I was so caught up in the big 3 that I couldn't focus on any other manga. now I'm reading between 17 - 20 different ones a week . Man, I think I'm addicted to this stuff. :\

I like Fairy Tail better than most of the Big Three. Oda seems obsessed with excessive back-story to the point where it just gets dull. Not to mention how he spent 3-4 chapters giving us an oceanography and marine biology lesson :\. What I miss are scenes where you can actually get into it... like (OP Spoiler)
when Shanks suddenly saved Colby from Admiral Akainu during the Battle of Marineford
. You don't get many scenes like that in manga, but FT actually had one recently when (FT Spoiler)
Gildartz stopped Bluenote from killing Cana
.

Bleach is... well... Bleach? Kubo had a good story up until he seemingly ran out of ideas and let the entire
Aizen thing play out for an ungodly amount of time. I don't think the story has ever truly recovered from that. Naruto is okay right now, but personally... I'd prefer more Rock Lee! More scenes with Minato is never a bad thing either. He usually shows quite a bit of bad-assery whenever he's around! The back-story of (Naruto spoiler)
when Minato fought off Madara and sealed the Fox
was actually good.

IDK, some of the recent chapters have been OK. Though, I do generally agree, he likes to take his sweet time moving the plot along. I just hope he doesn't end the series with the 5000 different plot holes he currently has open.

I have to agree with everything here. I think what put Naruto over the hump for me was the madara v minato fight. it seems in OP they're getting to the good stuff now so i'm excited about that. As for bleach, I haven't read the entire series yet, but I've gotten to a point in the anime that I just bear to watch it anymore.

Oh and OP, Yu Yu Hakusho was one of my all time favorites and is dubbed. I give it a 9/10 overall. There are some slow parts to it, but I really enjoyed the show as a whole.

Just watched Elfen Lied. What a dark and twisted tale that was... Still I was compelled to finish the whole series in a day, so I must have liked it. Don't watch it if you mind seeing animated boobies.

Anybody have suggestions that are similar to Elfen Lied?

Was it dubbed or subbed?

What naruto needs is a girlfriend. Either hinata or sukora. I perfer hinata shes had a thing for him since day one and they really need to get to geather or go on a date kiss or something. Has anyone read the manga and found out if naruto finds love out there.

He finds out that Hinata likes him during the Pain arc, but I don't recall him doing anything with said knowledge.

I have to give a nod to One Piece. It starts out very silly but then gets more serious as the story progresses. There are two versions of the dub - the first one is just awful but I've heard the second version is much better.

Although, manga-wise... Oda needs to really get more consistent as this past chapter was just plain boring. I almost just stopped reading it because I got so bored halfway through, and it doesn't help that I had no idea what was going on...
showing two groups of fishmen without easily designating who is good or bad makes for an awkward situation. I think the only obvious one was when the fishmen ate the "senzu bean" and broke out of the chains.

It's shonen (boys) anime so I wouldn't expect anything to really happen. The general trend in them is almost universally to hint at possible relationships, but never really develop them (unless it's specially a romance one).

I started it... fucking Netflix has the episodes out of order. The first 3 episodes go 3, 1, 2. It was obnoxiously confusing until I looked it up on wikipedia.

For OP I am anime-only so that's interesting. Is it becoming less consistent? Cause I've found all arcs to be pretty solid.

Shows that are dark and have a bit of the old ultra-violence:
- Blue Gender
- Gantz
- Texhnolyze

If you can avoid reading spoilers, the first 3 episodes of Gai-Rei-Zero manage to take your expectations and trample them underfoot.

Agreed. I think this is the worse OP arc to date. I think the fact that the arc doesn't seem to be in much relation to what's going on outside that we have had world affecting arcs that this seems boring. very bleach-ish I think.

I say there are more than 2 fishmen groups.
Hordy's New Fishman Pirates and wanting to reform fishman society kinda
Van Decken's Flying Pirates wants to marry the Princess for her power to call the Sea Kings
King Neptune and his army and the people
Jinbei and possibly any old Fishman pirates still with him

I do agree that they don't seem separated out well and its hard to tell whats going on with lends itself to why this hasn't been the best arc
