I hope it does not suck as bad as Tiberian Sun, Generals, Dune 2000, Dmperor Battle For Dune, and all of the other things that the broken shell of WestWood has churned out since EA bought them.

RA2 was ok.

I third the recommendation for Supreme Commander. It will blow your mind. Beta just ended, but the demo's out and available 😀 Giantass battles.

Resource management includes (but not limited to): food, energy, fuel, ammunition, natural resources (coal, oil, gas, water, for example), politics, religion, etc. etc.

Hearts of Iron 2: Doomsday 😉

Politics matter, Communist? Facism? Democratic? Some where in between it all. Though usually it depends on productivity, very in depth game. Based in World War 2 for Hearts of Iron 2, the Doomsday extends it to WW3, world vs Russia.

Commanders have bounes, overstack the commanders ability and you lose it plus some, it goes on and on. Check out their forums if anything.

I love Company of Heroes (tons of micromanagement/resource management)

Can someone go into more detail on what kind of micromanagement and resource management that Company of Heroes has?

Hrmmm. SupComm seems interesting, but it looks like there is no real in between. You either love the game or absolutely hate it. And mixed reviews on the AI.. some say it is really hard, while others say it's way too easy, while others say it was dumbed down on purpose in the demo?

Battle for Middle Earth I and II, but stay away from The Return of the Witch King - horrible balancing issues that have yet to be resolved.

Has anybody tried Paraworld and have any thoughts on that? I've heard good things about it and from what else I've heard I think it may have what the OP is looking for... I'm not completely sure though.

Give Age of Empires III another go.

Star Wars: Empire at War (I only played the demo for a bit but it seems pretty in-depth)

Company of Heroes seems to have rave reviews, but sounds like Ground Control in the sense that there is no real resource mgmt. You capture a point and are rewarded with more troops/supplies. I favor RTS's where you have to gather resources.

This post makes it obvious you have never played Company of Heroes.

Company of heroes all the way.

so true.
CoH is a great RTS game. Your troops have pros and cons, just because you train Grenadiers doesn't mean they can take out your opposing team's squad. Each type of unit in this game is designed for a role. We're talking about Long Range, Med-Short Range, effectiveness, then when they get an upgraded gun, etc etc.

Then you have tanks with the same type of pro's and con's, ie, BALANCE.

You don't gather resources, but you do have to manage how you capture points etc. It's a difficult game to many, probably because they are too dumb to grasp all that, but its really one of the best RTS games I've played so far. Besides that, the graphics and sound is amazing.

I'm still playing it each night online.

Look me up and maybe we can play: WayneGrow

If you're looking to build harvesters, collect resources, and bring them back to your base you're out of luck. It has no resources in that sense.

However, if you think that makes it a game for RTS noobs, you are sadly mistaken. The concept of capturing and holding points, maintaining supply lines to those points, etc introduces a new level of complexity that more than makes up for the lack of harvesting. Not to mention the much deeper management of individual units including picking up dropped enemy weapons, hard and soft cover, etc.

The single player game is more complex and difficult than AOE, and the multilayer is just as frantic as Starcraft.

Anyone played the fairly recent Star Wars RTS? Galactic Empires, or something? I think they just released an expansion too...I played teh demo a while back, btu was wondering if the game was worth picking up. The demo was fun, but it seemed like the game could get ridiculously repetitive. ...

I think it works in a very similar way to Warhammer, the developer of CoH and Warhammer is one and the same.

Supreme commander I think is the best rts I have ever played. I love it cause it's fairly simple resource management. Mass and Energy. You can build mass fabricators to make mass if you have more energy then mass. Battles can get huge. Playing in the beta with 4 people with 1000 unit cap is amazing. If it doesn't bring your computer to its knees.
