I read the June issue of Consumer Report and they say Honda is top then Toro, then Craftman, then Snapper.

I need a basic gas powered push lawn mower. Let me know which one served you well in the last few years. TIA.

Just don't get Murray, they SUCK!!

I just got a Torro from my mom 6.5 HP RWD Personal Pace. Seems very durable, but I haven't used it yet though.

That's the one I got. The engine is a little under powered and it will stall out pretty quickly. I have to cut my grass at least every 7 days if I want to be able to mulch.

Sam's club has an MTD that has a Honda motor on it. Its a high-wheel push. I got one, nice & quiet. ~$180.

I use the cheapo $200 MTD/Yard Machines mower from Home Depot to mow my 1/2-acre every week. Works great, bags and/or mulches, starts first pull every time, slices through foot deep wet grass like a knife through warm butter. Lawnmovers are disposable items now, cheaper to replace them than to fix them. And as long as you maintain it right it should last 20 years. Don't waste your money on a Honda.
btw, Toro = MTD and Craftsman = Snapper. It always surprises me that CR can't see past brand names to the actual manufacturers.

True enough, but also remember that Briggs and Stratton makes both the "Power Built" series and the Vanguard and I/C series engines. The Power Built line is junk, but the Vanguard and I/C are easily a match for both Kohler and Honda. Same manufacturer != same quality.

I got a John Deere when we moved into the new house. It was great at first but after 5 years it's having a hard time mulching the grass. I've replaced the blade a few times but it just doesn't work like it used to. Always starts up right away (B/S motor).

Uhh..I work in a Toro plant that makes walk behind mowers and I have never, ever seen an MTD in there. I can ask my parents (who have worked there for 20+ years each to make sure) but it would surprise me.

I know that Toro makes LawnBoys. Toro bought them out about 10-15 years ago.

Toro Personal Pace is the best IMHO. Very durable and extremely comfortable to use.

Just make sure to try and get a steel deck if possible.

Honestly, it doesn't mater all that much what brand it is, as the deck will usually rust out from under the engine before the engine fails. Make sure the deck is thick gauge; not wimpy 16 or 14. In additon to rusting out, the thinner decks will also scalp your lawn.

However, Honda > *, but the best bang for the buck would be a 5-6hp self propelled Craftsman. It only takes about 4 HP to cut grass on a 24" deck. I had a 27" rider with a 4HP tecumseh engine from the early 70's that ran like a champ untill I bumped up the compression too far by shaving the head. Even then it ran forever but it burned oil because of the increased crankcase pressure and a clogged breather. I finialy gave it away to a young kidas it was his dream to have a rider, I just bought a new one. I should call him up and see if he still has it.

I currently have a Craftsman self-propelled bagging mower. My dad bought it off one of his friends for me for $30...but it's a $200 mower. It's nice, but if I were to buy one, I'd get a basic mower with a briggs & stratton engine. They have a standard parts base and are extremely easy to repair in the event that something happens down the road.

I really don't have a lot of experience with push-mowers, but my dad has a Honda from the 80s that has been used excessively, & it's still going :)

I have no complaints about the Honda we bought 2 years ago. We bought it to replace a 3 year old Craftsman "self propelled" that would not propel itself up a 10% grade. Oddly enough when we purchased the Honda I brought it home, followed all the prep instructions including putting the supplied oil in the crankcase. I started it up and began to mow. Went up one side of the front yard, turned, did the 2nd leg, then the mower stalled. Apparently the engine froze up as I could not pull the start cord at all. Home Depot did take it back but it was possibly the rudest customer service experience I have ever encountered. The new replacement has been working flawlessly ever since and it never slips.
