Hello all. I’d like to get your opinion on how I can approach a delicate conversation with my management here at my company. I manage a software deployment system here and we were responsible for getting out a brand new anti-virus software to the whole company and that is now done. However I am not managing the new AV program or monitoring it threats found, etc. That has always been another groups job. The other person who has managed this AV software has not gotten involved in any discussion on him taking over the role like he did with the old software Our team does PC services and because the AV software is on all of our PC’s, I think managements natural thought was to move it over to the people who manage the pc’s the AV software now sits on.

I don’t want to take this headache on. It’s a few hours each week to monitor the new system. I just don’t have the time to do this. The same team that handles the AV management like they have always done should take on this new AV software. I really want to just say “I don’t want to do this.” But I need a few more reasons or examples to make my case as I can’t just say I don’t want to do it. I need a few other points to make them think “yeah, your right.” Suggestions?

Boss: "Hey thatsright. How's the new AV thing going?"

thatsright: "Implementation went great. So good in fact that i'm gong to brag about myself for 20 minutes. Here are all the reasons why I'm great, and I have a huge dong. But you'd better check with small-penis Mikey over in the software group about how its going since he is responsible for that."

Boss: "Wow. You're a great employee with excellent pants. I'll go see what Mini-Mike is up to now."

Learn to say no. Nothing more. No. And walk out. Trailing bird is optional.

Can you just be presumptuous and setup a 'handoff meeting'? "Hey now that roll out is done lets get together and so we can make sure (insert monitoring group name) has everything they need"

Why can't you explain the above? If you don't have time to do this work, you need to present the options of either not doing it or transferring something else that you do to another person.

If you can't do that, it's time to look for a new job.

Easy, if you really dont have the time bring up the fact that if you do this you will need to hand off something else to make time and ask for a meeting to be setup to hand off this other task to make time.

Or do it and enjoy the job security.

Will you be given extra time to monitor this AV system and be paid accordingly? ;)

"Taking on more work" does not necessarily correlate to "more job security". Two fatal mistakes you can make as an employee, get too comfortable, and make assumptions about your worth to your employer. If you're wrong about how difficult it is to replace you, then your so called job security just evaporated.

If you really don't have time, just tell them and explain why. My employer was wanting me to work on on an additional software project after hours at home. Am in a full-time field position working 40-48hrs/week currently. Just said no, I'm not going to put in more hours than that. Don't care what you pay.
