Need a decent web-mail account: willing to pay for it

Bottom line: My home email addy is going bye-bye in a week; shutting off my cable service, as I'm going away on business for awhile.

I need to continue doing online bill paying, not to mention communicating with relatives and friends.

What's a good webmail service? I know about Yahoo...but I'm not sure I'd trust Yahoo w/my CC numbers and such.

I'd be willing to pay a nominal fee for say, six months of service. Don't need dialup; I'll have internet access; I just need the account.

Thanks in advance for your assistance. :)

Do you currently own a domain?

How much are you willing to pay per year?

If you need an account, I could set it up on one of my domains. No charge if you share some of your porn mail with me. :D

Thanks guys, I appreciate the help. I've got so much crap to do...not enough time to do it. :(

I forgot about the domain thing. How long would it take to set one up? It would have to be remotely hosted.

Shoot, if you own a domain, you could just use Ripplehost. It's $5/year and you get 100 megs of space. Already set up for pop and webmail access. Although, I am going to probably install another webmail program instead of their default. It's a bit simple, but effective.

Real easy to set up and maintain.

Yep that's what I always suggest, at least 100 AT'ers have gone this route and are VERY happy. A few weeks ago I received a thank you PM from someone who was tired of switching their e-mail address everytime their ISP changed ownership (think they had AT&T cable internet).

$8.88/yr NameCheap.com domain registration
$4.99/yr RippleHost.com web hosting with 100MB/1GB, you can use your 100MB for web hosting, email (includes FREE webmail), pichosting, forums, etc.

Your e-mail address will never change ever again, and you get up to 5 e-mail boxes ... you can use Outlook/Eudora with your 5 email accounts.

The whole process takes about 10 minutes.

First register your domain with NameCheap.com

Then modify your DNS name servers to custom name servers
ns1.ripplehost.com
ns2.ripplehost.com

Now go to RippleHost.com, register for an account, get a web hosting account, pay the $4.99.

If you do everything today, your website should be up and fully propogated by tomorrow morning.

If you need any help let me know.

All that for US$14 a year? Crap, time to dust off the Visa. Damn you, RossMAN! :D

Yep it's a killer bargain.

Yahoo! email charges $19.95 per year for additional e-mail space, you get LESS space and not even your own domain or even web hosting!

Nope but I have heard that it can be done, although RippleHost does not officially support IMAP, it does work for most people.

I never use my RippleHost account and forgot my login details.

I would stay away from hosting email at your own domain. Ripplehost, etc. may be cheap but if they get overloaded or go under a few months from now where are you going to be when you can't access your email? I had many bad experiences with cheap web hosts. In particular, email uptime was hard to come by.

Besides, you're afraid to trust Yahoo (a publically traded company) with your CC number but you're ok with giving it to some fly-by-night overseas hosting company?? If you're worried about the CC number, use Citibank or Amex cards that have one-time use card payments.

Since this is going to be your lifeline email, stick with a reputable company. If you want to go the hosting route, check out godaddy.com. Another service to check into is pobox.com ... they have a very good reputation for reliability. Other than that, check out Yahoo's PLUS email service. $29/year with excellent uptime and reliability. Plus you can pretty much access from anywhere.

I'm curious about something; Ripplehost is owned by some guy named Alan Reid (allegedly, that's his name)

How safe is my personal info?? I see no "Privacy Act Statement" or "usage of personal info" legal mumbojumbo anywhere on that site. (unless I missed it)

How do I know that this isn't hosted by some college kid with megabandwith?

Now I'm nervous. :Q

Thanks, TNTBOY. ;) Check out my post, about .002 seconds before you posted the above. You are right...I got to thinking about stuff just like that. :(

AFAIK RippleHost is no frills, little or no tech support division of Alan's very successful web hosting company SplashHost.com, go to the WebHostingTalk.com forums and search for SplashHost to see his reputation.

Or you could just register the domain without hosting, NameCheap does offer free e-mail forwarding.
