I started my castle and it said 6 hours to build then you get a card that drops it to like 3 hours.

I could build more stonecutters or woodcutter's huts or i could build a hovel (house). That was all I could build at that point. I already had 1 of each so I didn't see a point in making more.

I guess it's supposed to be like those browser bases games Icarium and stuff that we used to play where you set 1 or 2 things to build and then wait a few hours and do it again. sorry, thats not what I wanted to play.

I don't know why anyone thought these 'hours between moves' browser games were a good idea, and wonder if many people play them.

It's like breaking sex up into hand holding for 60 seconds, two hours later 60 seconds of kissing, two hours later disrobing... doesn't work that way (until the big 60 seconds).

It's for casual gamers. Facebook gamers. You jump on in your spare time, play between classes, or while waiting for a bus, then return to several hours later when you have more time.

These kinds of games have their place, but they aren't my cup of tea.

did you try forged alliance? it took care of a lot of issues, and is a lot of fun on a newer machine with enough muscle to handle large games.

Check out Sins of a Solar Empire. It isn't exactly like you described - but it probably isn't like anything you've played, either. It has a lot to do with expansion, but it is very important to reinforce and protect your planets. Very epic, addicting game.

I was wondering about how Sins might be applicable to what they want. They could definitely keep from attacking one another until after a certain time. I suppose they could choose a single planet to fortify with a fully upgraded starbase.

You scout the planets before attacking them. If you encounter the other player (Assuming this is 1v1 and no AI players) then you don't attack is about all you do really. The only problem is the game is about colonizing as many planets as you can. I could see this becoming a really boring race for 2hours. Probably not very enjoyable but who knows. It is a fun game tho and pretty cheap so give it a whirl.

Supcom FA gets my vote.

I've been playing Shogun 2 lately, and I saw a couple of people commenting about it as well...

There really isn't base building, but the game is awesome for for "army vs army" sieges and field battles .... that said, I am terrible when I tried a couple of multiplayer battles ... hehehe

"Star Ruler" is similar to the Sins series .... but it offers a lot in terms of exponential scaling and ship creation .... if the OP does happen to like Sins, might be worth checking out Star Ruler too ...

I tried the star ruler demo... Be careful in adjusting the game settings as they broke more then one attempt that I made at it. Levels of research make stuff cost a lot more really quickly, to the point where you might never be able to build anything ever since they would take so much resources. Also if research levels get to high stats of everything go back to 0 due to how the game handles overflows.

is and will always be Total annihilation + expansions bt CC and the 3.1bone patch (this game is neverending since its easy to create new units yeahi mean really create new units with some tools ;) its also an option to download unit packs mods or even total conversions (combining them with TA conflict crusher for solving conflicts)

what i would like to see is a new total annihilation
60+ different base defences from lasers rockets and machine guns
to lightning - plasma - bombs and ballistic towers
allot of different options on attacking
kbot-vehicle-hover-boat-submarine-heli-airplane-tank-car-mechs-krogoth-experimentals-spiders and other animal like designs name it its got it

big epic basebuilding building bases to big to destroy with even 5 direct hit nukes
and most important UNIT CREATING!
just extract a hpi file change the unit file and or weapon files
pack it up again and ur ready to go
(thats the 20 second way to create a new unit)
its also possible to use software example> 3d0builder
to create models and add textures

my ta got like 30+ units on each building times all different categories
times 5 different tech levels is like 700 different units!
and 80+ buildings on each builder (dont forget tech 1-2-3-4-exp)
so thats around 500 buildings total that u can choose to build on the way reaching highest tech
and did i tell about the different weapons ?!!!
i had all weapon id's in use and all unit id's (ta conflict crusher)
if u want any info on this pm me

supreme commander FA will be nxt in line sc2 sux
but for me not easy enough to create my own units and adding them ingame

starcraft 2 is nice but it needs more of everything its like a very very good base (but it needs a very big expansion ;)

awaiting starcraft 2 expansion

and what are they planning on supcom ?......sc2 expansions ? or sc3?

im not ruling out any games i also like the alternatives
but these are just my favs and in my opinion the best rts out there

HEY NEWB, WELCOME!

Read the OP again. We are talking about RTS's that focus on building up a home base first.

LOL! I love this analogy. Not sure why but I do...

Aww ... I saw new replies and was hoping there was a secret awesome game like TA:CC that never showed up on my Radar before ... but it was not ...

Even though it's old news, I haven't seen it mentioned here, so here goes: Spring was pretty neat to mess with from time to time ... essentially more modern looking 3d version of TA:CC ....

Have been playing Kerbal Space program and Minecraft as of recent here ... pretty much gave up on RTS.

I used to love Dawn of War 1 and spent many hours of my life online. I dislike the second one in comparison. I love to base build also. There are lots of add ons also but I'm un sure how the online community is now.

Space marines, Chaos and Eldar are all great fun and in the first one base building is good fun. There are unit caps, but you can build a decent sized army with good tech and play for a while.

Lately I love supreme commander forged alliance. I love how it is similiar to combat to real life, in that land, air and naval superiority are very important. There are lots of buildings and a huge unit cap. Air superiority and naval superiority kind of takes away from the need to build huge armies though. Very good game, just a little fast. But if you and your mate play together, you can build some great bases.

I also enjoyed playing skirmishes on C&C 3 tiberium wars. You can build huge bases and lots of troops but a but limited In this regard I suppose.

SOSE:R might be the most modern solution for what the OP is looking for. Game options allow to accelerate income and research, with 4 planets each you'll max out the research and have enough resources for the final clash within the hour. Very hard to crack a 2 starbase TEC loyalist defense with 5 repair platforms for each starbase and bunch of hoshiko and kodiak ships assisting in defense. Throw in a few Dunov's and a Marza, top it off with a leveled up Titan and it can't be done.

This. I don't think there is any other RTS out there that has the combination of massive scale, huge armies, and base building.

Can't believe nobody has mentioned Cossacks yet. I've only played the first one (European Wars), and I'm not sure if the sequel is any good. But I used to spend hours on the first one with my friends. We would have like an hour-long truce, build huge cities surrounded by walls, and create armies in the thousands. It was glorious.
