ok so my buddy and i LOVE RTS games but we dont play by the rules usually we will set up massive battles with no attacks for an hour or 2 while we build massive armys.

So what im looking for is a RTS game where you can like Build a base, with walls torrents, defences that kind of stuff so one of us can build a massive base and the other has to attack it. played the command and conquer stuff but u don't really Build a base just buildings.

There isnt really anything unfortunately :( Nothing good anyway.

Supreme commander 1 is the closest thing that springs to mind, if you havent played that i think you may have a lot of fun with it.

Company of heros on certain maps is a bit like that but the basebuilding aspect is toned down compared to other RTS games.

Age of Empires 3 lets you build walls in single player. I can't remember if you can staff them like Stronghold (put archers on walls), but there were some pretty good maps where you just got swarmed while in a 'castle' (behind walls), and that sounds like what you are asking for.

This. I don't think there is any other RTS out there that has the combination of massive scale, huge armies, and base building.

I am currently addicted to Total War: Shogun 2... picked it up last week for $7.50 and haven't had sleep these past 4 days...:'(

Definitely Stronghold. More specifically Stronghold Crusaders.

Like somebody said, Company of Heroes could be a good one. With setting up sandbags, mg nests, wire, tank blocks, land mines etc...

Rise of Nations lets you build forts and towers and such. Game modes give you options for no war before a certain age or time.

Total Annihilation with Core Contingency would be my favorite though. I loved bunkering in with crazy defensive weapons. Eventually build the super-long-range big bertha with the CC building which allows defensive weapons to automatically fire at radar targets and watch the fireworks :D

I wasn't a fan of stronghold, just didn't give me the scale I wanted ... that said never played any xpacs or sequels to it.

Supreme Commander has it to some extent, but it IMO sucks for turtle games as it's pretty easy to smash through all the base defenses with any decent force ...

The only game I really could recommend would be Total Annihilation with Core contingency .... there is no automatic "no attack for X minutes" type of setting ... meaning realisticly, you could still do early spam attacks ... however if you're playing with your buddy, you could always simply set ground rules and play by them .... that's how the 8+ hour TA CC games between me, 2 of my friends, and my brother used to go (usually it was the 3 of them vs me ... hehehehe I was the best at getting huge Krogoth armies up and running... so it took their 3 combined forces to take them out)

Agreed, I had so many epic battles in TA that would swing back and forth, huge armies clashing. The map was littered with blasted units, it was awesome.

I would ban nukes for this scenario. Seems like it would be too easy to just build up a bunch of nukes to take out the entire attacking army. I haven't played in a really long time though, so maybe the lengthy nuke build process would balance this out.

Check out Sins of a Solar Empire. It isn't exactly like you described - but it probably isn't like anything you've played, either. It has a lot to do with expansion, but it is very important to reinforce and protect your planets. Very epic, addicting game.

i loaded that up the other day to play and never got around to it...

i tried it out yesterday. i finished the tutorial and was like, now what? It takes hours to build certain things so its more like those browser based games.

there wasn't anything new for me to build or anything to do...

so i uninstalled it.

So I started playing Stronghold Kingdoms. It's amazing seeing those old 2d Sprites in HD.

Although the tutorial is pretty fucking stupid. Told me to build some defenses, which aren't going to be finished for 2 hours, and then told me that an enemy army is coming 8 minutes without showing me how to even train any troops.

edit: so apparently the AI attacked with 3 peasants and lost, but are battles auto-fought? This game makes zero sense.

supcom forged alliance is what you want. the only thing is, proper defenses consist of units as well as defensive buildings. if you only go for turrets etc, you'll get pwnt pretty easily by the attacking army.
