(NECRO) Anyone into juicing? Recipes, advice?

I've noticed that a cup of carrot juice in the morning wakes me up and gives me a boost of energy that coffee can't anymore (I drink a lot of coffee). I've been paying atrocious NYC prices for fresh made juice so I ordered a juicer to save some cash in the the long run ($5 a cup! Bah!). Anyone recommend any tasty juices/mixes? I'm trying beets, carrot, and of course the usual orange.

This is the juicer I'm getting - not high end in the least but seemed like a good place to start:

I like celery, carrot, and parsley, with a little apple for sweetness. When juicing dark green leafy veggies, don't use too much at first -- it may upset your stomach if you're not used to large quantities of them.

One of the best drinks I ever had was 'apple' lemonade -- 4 apples and half a lemon (peeled of course, don't juice citrus fruits with the rind on)

i have this one. Video demo here

Having know people who tried the the Montel Williams HealthMaster and the Jack LaLanne's Power Juicer, avoid them, total crap.

You will have lots of energy, lose weight, gets rid of acne, lowers cholesterol, etc.

The problem is if you constantly drink fruits and vegetables in there raw form, your stomach will not be happy and will have explosive diarrhea. So don't drink it more than 3x a week.

Be prepared to spend close to $100.00 on fruits and vegetables if you plan on making enough for a week.

I don't use a juicer...you throw away too much of the "good stuff" in the pulp.
I prefer my vitamix.

I've heard that point and it's a very valid one, but I have a terrible diet and never eat enough veggies and fruits, so I think juice will be a nice shortcut... I know I won't get the very important fiber part of the equation, but the nutrients from juicing should be better than none at all (my current diet).

I think I'll get a vitamix or (gag) a ninja soon enough. I think I'll reuse the fiber in pasta sauce for now.

I had a Jack LaLanne Power Juicer for a while but the thing was such a pain in the ass to clean that I hardly ever used it and eventually just gave it away.

There's actually a lot more that gets tossed than just the fiber...a huge percentage of the vitamins is also in that wasted pulp. I suppose using it in pasta sauce would be a good way to put it to use...but it's gonna make your pasta sauce taste kind of funny...:p

I have borderline hypertension so I look forward to the health benefits of simply replacing unhealthy foods and softdrinks with veggie juice. Any thing else would be gravy, and carrot juice in particular gives me an energy boost without the crash of caffeine. I picked up some reusable water bottles as well to bring to work and aim to replace one cup of coffee a day with one cup of fruit or veggie juice while drinking more water and skipping out on diet sodas.

$100 seems like a lot but I spend more on cigarettes and I'm very well aware of the negative impact on my health. $100 for something positive seems ok... Maybe the fact that juice and cigarettes are not nearly as delicious of a mix as coffee and cigarettes will help me quit :)

I've read some awesome tips out there - carrot pulp for healthy carrot cake, apple for brownies... Lots of ways to use that pulp. I'm going to ziplock the pulp and see what my wife can come up with :)

To add another perhaps too personal detail, fiber lacking or not - carrot juice really helps.. Unclog things.. Not sure why but it's almost immediate and perhaps a bit psychosomatic, but I could be backed up all day, have a cup of juice and then... Well, nevermind.

heh-heh...I used to eat tons of fresh fruit cut up into a fruit salad every day. Watermelon, pineapple, strawberries, cantaloupe, blueberries, bananas, etc.
I never had constipation problems...but never had "the other type" of problem either.
My deck engineer decided he wanted to try the fresh fruit salads as well...he spent all day in the porta-john for the first two days...on the third day, he quit eating fruit. :p

I am totally trying apple lemonade the moment I get my juicer!

How do you juice your greens? I haven't had luck when I've tried in the past.

I need to actively improve my fruit and veg intake aside from juicing - my diet's way too convenience food oriented. I'm back up all the time, but I'm the only one to blame since breakfast's usually a sausage egg and cheese on a roll instead of something nutritious.

I drink so much damn V8, it's just too convenient.

Original V8 has 480mg of salt in a 8oz bottle, very bad for you.

freedomsbeat212, if you quit smoking and put the funds into juicing instead, you will feel better.

Today's smoothie was made from:
1-1/4 lb. fresh strawberries
1/2 of a peeled and cored pineapple
1 mango
1 banana
2 carrots
1 cup frozen blueberries
just a splash of passion fruit/orange/guava juice for liquid
a couple tablespoons of honey for added sweetness.

All blended together...made a nice, thick fruity breakfast beverage.

I USUALLY throw in 1-2 cups of Tillamook Mountain Huckleberry yogurt, but I was out this morning.
I have about 1/2 pitcher of this left for tomorrow morning.
