NEC3500 A - any reason not to buy one?

First, it's not the drive that's finicky with the nForce 2. It's the nForce 2 that's finicky with the drive. More specifically, nVidia's junky IDE drivers cause problems with a lot of hard drives and burners. Solution: don't install them!

It's a good drive.

. 256MB is kind of borderline for modern Windows. Add another 256MB at least and you should be set.

my only problem with this drive is that it is incredibly slow at ripping dvds. i can rip 2 in my lite-on before 1 is finished in this NEC.

and that's with rip-lock disabled.

A friend of mine bought two of these burners and both have produced coasters on occasion. Notably the drive will stall during a mid burn. Don't know if its due to a general system instability problem. I'd still pick one up though, the AT review was just a little too good.
