Heard that it won't read some DVD media types? Hmmm, wondering if I should shell out the extra $10 on a BenQ one instead...

WTH I had 3 black NEC 3550A's and I'm pretty sure they had a black tray
 
jumped on it, though I don't absolutely NEED it.. the simple fact that one of the best DVD burners available is only $30 gives me a sense that there is indeed fairness in the world!
 
I retested my 3550 and it did well on a few other media. Unfortunatly it still hates those fuji + or - R 16x (prodisc ) that my benq 1655 burns not great but ok. And although the nec burned the other media well the benq tended to be much better. From personal experience I still give the preference to benq. Prices are still good if you need a burner so go for it.

i got an aopen from microadvantage that was beige faced, but black tray
plus they charged $8 separately to ship the black face

I have never seen any current pc component that was so rediculiously superior to its competition. I bought my drive for $55 and in comparision to my nec 3550 I would still pay the $55 price. Bottom like I regularly have burn failures with the nec and others but so far have only had 1 inexplicable failure with my benq. And thats with name brand sony and fuji media. So far only verbatim workes reliably in my other burners.
Learn from my horrible experience with dvd burners.

Been getting a lot of bad burns on my toshiba drive recently. Figured it was time for a better burner. This was just the sort of info I was looking for in my search.

I bought this drive for $32 shipped a little ways back and while the outside was black, the inside was beige. Just a heads up for those who are very picky about these things...

good drives, never had a problem with my 3550. that lightscribe is nice, but i think you need to buy special media that support it (read: more expensive). so unless you're crazy into burning cd's dvd's and labeling them, quite a waste of money.

My big issue with BenQ is that I have seen/dealt with a lot of their PC products and most have been bad IMHO as far as quality or longevity more specifically. I'm not saying they don't perform well but how long will it last. I still remember when BenQ came out with their first or second series of DVD burners and everybody was like OMFG these are so great at first and then a few months later people were complaining about them not working. It may be a mute point with a $30-$40 burner but my NEC 3500 has been burning fine for a year along with my 3550 with strictly Verbatim media now.
 
I have this drive for well over a year now and can vouch for its trouble-free performance. So far I've never encountered any media it can't handle. I don't remember the last time it produced coaster. For the price you can't ask for a better deal.

During the CDRW phase, I've had bad experiences with BenQ, Sony, and Cendyne. So I will always be reluctant to touch those. I will stick with NEC, Liteon, Plextor or TDK.
