i believe the pioneer dvr111d is about 32 bucks in newegg as well. it reads DVD-RAM (since they cant possibly add any new features or increase the speed, i guess DVD-RAM reading would be a new 'feature', albeit useless to many)

for a user with no software the samsung is a better deal as it includes software + DVDRAM and lightscribe capability...
I got 4 of those those bare NECs for $27.99 free shipped last month

Tried the samsung, I have the nec 3550. Definitly go with the benq. I have the 1655 benq and I get no bad burns on any media all the time. Newegg is out of the 1655 currently but the 1650 is around $27 and should do similar burns. Skip the benq dq60. Its just a pioneer drive.
I have never seen any current pc component that was so rediculiously superior to its competition. I bought my drive for $55 and in comparision to my nec 3550 I would still pay the $55 price. Bottom like I regularly have burn failures with the nec and others but so far have only had 1 inexplicable failure with my benq. And thats with name brand sony and fuji media. So far only verbatim workes reliably in my other burners.
Learn from my horrible experience with dvd burners.

In my experience the NEC drives are merely okay. Only issues I've seen are media compatibility and being unable to burn at faster speeds (can't even select it). My slightly older Pioneer burns everything I throw at it - at faster than media-rated speeds. NEC burns okay, but just slow. Maybe just my media choice.

I am in for two! Replace the one in the main desktop and add one to the design PC. Good show. Thanks op!
