I wonder when we'll see more SATA dvd burners.

why waste the port? although i think it would be nice to get rid of the EIDE cables... and the floppy cables (i don't have a floppy drive in my rig), and the parallel port, and the serial ports, and the onboard audio, and... so probably not anytime soon.

I've got 7 SATA ports on my mobo and one IDE, the IDE cables are a mess, I'd like a SATA DVD drive as well (total of 3 ports will be used up than.

Really just for the improved cabling. I know there's no real performance difference for optical drives IDE vs. SATA.

I have a floppy in my computer, needed for my motherboard SATA drivers and because you never know when you'll need a floppy for something 🙂 Such as a quick memtest86.

I would like to see a good deal on an SATA DVD burner as well, since I just bought a 9200 Dimension from Dell, and didn't realize that all it supports is SATA. If I had known that, I would have paid the extra $$ to include a DVD burner in the purchase. Oh well.

I wish they improve on the SATA connectors and cables.

SATA cables are pretty stiff and the connectors on the drives are flimsy as hell. Easy to break off by accident.

Connectors are a still bit flimsy on the devices, but on the motherboard (at least a Gigabyte DS3 I recently used) the connectors are solid and improved.

Motherboard connectors are fine. I'm specifically pointing out the flimsiness of the drives.

its not a waste. SATA cables are better managed. and SATA ports are small to boot, the place it took for 2 PATA channels on the old mobo probably can hold 8 SATA ports.

phase out PATA already. my Dell XPS 700 has 6 SATA ports, and i found out there's actually one IDE channel. i was surprised.

You're missing the point. Motherboard manufactures cannot remove all PATA ports without alienating their customers UNTIL optical drives are commonly available in SATA, which is most definitely not the case at this point in time.

Don't believe me? Check Newegg. They have hundreds of different optical drives for sale, and of these, only 3 are for SATA.

OEM.
Yes. What's the difference?
It's the same drive as retail without a fancy box and a bunch of useless trial disks.
NEC drives have a huge enthusiast following for a reason.
