NEC 16X Double Layer DVD±RW Drive = $56

HOT!

I got mine last month at $59.95, very nice burner. Highly rated, and cheap too!

No coasters yet.

Personally I think the BenQ DW1620 is a better value. There is also a new riplock removal for the firmware to enable 16x reading of DVD+/-R media. The drive can even read dual layer discs @ 16x as well. Factor in the top notch burn quality and it easily beats the NEC up and down the street.

Black OEM model - http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-101-632&depa=1 - $58.99 w/ shipping
Beige OEM model - http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-101-633&depa=1 - $55.99 w/ free shipping

If you're looking for info about the riplock remove check club.cdfreaks.com in the BenQ/Phillips forums.

there is riplock removal for the NEC drive as well. i wish i didn't live in CA and get charged sales tax from NewEgg (for either of these drives!)

Yes it is true that there is a riplock removal tool for the NEC, but I'm not sure if it supports reading dual layer discs at 16x. Can anyone comment on this?

I've heard of quality issues with the BenQ DW1620, got the NEC not too long ago and it has been great, speed is fine.

all i know is i had some benq cdwriters and they were junk
would be working perfectly, and then all of a sudden coasters galore
i gave one to a partner in a machine i donated to him, and he was installing burner softwares every other month
it was better than nothing, and that was about it
boo benq

I admit to being a solid Lite-On fan, however, I'm extremely satisfied with my 3520. Updated firmware (with riplock ON for quietness) and it burns my YUDEN001's @ 16x all day 🙂

I was debating updating the firmware on my NEC, but since I have another DVD-ROM drive for ripping, I think maybe I'll just dedicate this one to burning. And for problem disks which my other DVD won't rip, maybe this slowed down NEC will do the trick.

if newegg one day sale is to end at 5:30 PM PST and it's later than that but I want to buy it now, how does that work? If they're still posting that price will i get it for that?

edit...newegg let me add it to my cart...great deal

The DVD writers are different, it's night and day, some workstations have burned 2000 DVD's and had no coasters with the BenQ burner.
