I learned long ago that when elementary is written in conjunction with math that bad things happen to my GPA.

Heh, it's not that bad. It's for people who are interested in understanding mathematical foundations. It starts off at the very beginning and slowly builds up from there.

This is a 1: 1. This is not a 1: 10 - 9.

Sometimes you should just admit you were wrong and move on. Trying to argue the point just makes you look obstinate.

Maybe I am obstinate, but not any more than you.

However 10 - 9 is closer to being a 1 than 1.999 ... is to being a 2.

:)

"Obstinate?"
I generally end up pondering whether they're an idiot or a troll. Never thought of obstinate. But, I think I'm closer. After the number of times it's been discussed here, to state otherwise places someone in one of my two categories. (Sometimes both.)

The smileys make me think he's trolling. That and his apparent unwillingness to even consider that he might be wrong.

I'll consider that I may be wrong, if you will.

I do understand the use in Calculus etc. However in general math 2 is not equal to 1.99999.

We are all splitting hairs. :)

I always consider that I may be wrong.

What is the difference in Calculus and "general math"?

General math is what Normal people use daily... Like 2 + 2 = 4 and 2 + 1.999 = 3.9999.

Calculus not so much... Most people never touch it past getting out of school.

Don't play dumb. :)

The rules of mathematics don't changed based on who is using it (unless it's the government... ;))

There you go playing dumb again.

You know what I mean or you really are dumb, which I don't believe is the case.

You and I both know they don't have Calc on the ASVAB Tests. These test are meant for the everyday joe walking on the street and that is all.

I'm not too surprised actually, considering military is usually a last resort for people who fail at academics and desperately need a job.

No you are completely wrong on this. You obviously know nothing about the military.

Granted there are mindless jobs in the military just like anywhere else. But a large portion of each service has very advanced technology and these people use, repair and maintain these systems.

These jobs are not given to people that have failed at academics and desperately needed a job.

Not considering those jobs... but the combat ones.

I hope you are being sarcastic...

2 + 1.999 = 3.999

Which is not 4. Just so you know.

Someone else corrected your statement to 2+1.999... = 3.999... and you said:

Thanks. But it still isn't 4. And it is still incorrect.

It *is* equal to four. Does an infantryman need to know that? Probably not. Does an officer picking out bombing targets need to know that? Probably not. Does any of that change the fact that it is equal to four? No.

For everyday usage 2 + 1.9999 ... is still 3.9999 ... with respect to the ASVAB questions which this post is about. That makes me still correct with respect to this OP. Yes. I am obstinate.

No, it's not. Don't confuse stubborn with flat out wrong.

All I know is when I set my nuts on a table everyone says that's the biggest 2 we have ever seen.

Clearly 2 can be anywhere between 1 and 3, I have proven it anecdotally.

I maintain it isn't the school's fault - rather the parents of the kids. Schools should not be held accountable for learning. That should be an individual decision.

Well lets go ahead and get this one out of the way:

0.999... = 1

This is not an approximation or just a 'close enough' equation. Infinite repeating digitals of nine after the decimal literally equals exactly one. It looks wrong, but essentially it's just a harmless quirk in how we denote numbers.

The proof of it is simple enough.

Most of you should be able to recognize that the following equations are true:
1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 = 1
0.333... + 0.333... + 0.333... = 0.999...
1/3 = 0.333...

And so it follows that:
1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 = 0.999...
1 = 0.999...

or

0.999... = x
9.999... = 10x
9.999... - 0.999... = 10x - 0.999...
9 = 10x - x (from 1)
9 = 9x
1 = x

I'm quite positive that pcgeek11 is as big a tool or bigger than the people failing the ASVAB. Get over yourself, and grow up.

(sad that I'm saying that to a near-60 year old)

Yeah pretty much figured that one out when he ignorantly insisted that "Infantry = Cannon Fodder".
