NCCA hands down Penn State punishment

The NCAA ruled today that Penn State would receive the following punishment for the covering up the Sandusky rape of children:

Loss of scholarships 20 per year for 4 years
$60 million dollar fine
4 year bowl ban
Vacate 111 wins from the years 1998-2011
Current players can transfer and play for other schools immediately
5 years probation

Good for the NCAA. With this ruling they clearly stated they would not allow a "football is king" culture.
 
The Big 10 is gonna announce their own sanctions at 11.. hard to argue for people who covered up child molestion

Exactly. They could have pulled the plug on the program for all I care. Raping kids should be just below murder as far as I am concerned, because you basically emotionally killed the kid and they will never be right again.

LOL what? This is arguably more harsh than the death penalty SMU got.

The NCAA lifted scholarship limits on other schools who want to recruit Penn State players. That sound you hear is every marginally talented to superstar penn state player making a mad dash to other schools.

penn state just got bitch slapped dude. the football program is pretty much dead now.

i dont know what to feel about this ruling. i understand the NCAA had to make a bold and loud statement that the shit that happened will never be tolerated, i get that. but on the other hand everybody who was directly involved is either in jail or dead there is nobody left to punish but the kids who play the game and had nothing to do with any of it.

WHen a problem is institutional the only thing left to do is punish the institution.

You can be sure that in the future there will be more oversight.
 
NCAA rules WERE broken. How about having a clue before you post?

I assumed you were the same person that said "slap on the wrist", but apparently there is more than one person posting about this that has no clue.

Which is why I think the NCAA should have stayed out of it. I hate what happened, but the NCAA shouldn't be able to regulate something unrelated to sports just because coaches were involved. It gives the NCAA too much power. Let the legal system handle it. I also don't like the fine, but I do like that the fine is going to charity, so that's a 50/50 from me.

“Unethical conduct . . . . may include, but is not limited to . . . (d) knowingly furnishing or knowingly influencing others to furnish the NCAA or the individual’s institution false or misleading information concerning an individual’s involvement in or knowledge of matters relevant to a possible violation of an NCAA regulation.”
 
Let the legal system handle it? They don't have the authority to do anything to the football program - the NCAA does.

Seriously, anyone that has a problem with these punishments is either a Penn St fan or just someone arguing to be the "contrary guy".

This is the worst violation of any kind in any NCAA sports program - and I say a penalty well deserved.
 
My expectation is that this is the end of football as we have known it at Penn State.

I don't understand the "no rules were broken" posts.

Children were raped at Penn State.

The rapes were reported to the football coach who reported them to the administration.

Who decided not to report it to the legal authorities.

This is a breath taking lack of integrity. One that permitted the rapes to continue.

Its a sad day.

Not sad because of the penalty. But sad because of the administration's lack of integrity.

And the head coach's lack of integrity. Afterall, we now know that he actively participated in covering up the rape(s). For shame, JoePa.
 
I think the punishment should fit the crime. First they should determine how long the school has been covering it up. So is that 10 years, 15 Years, 20 years? Then make the punishment the same length as the crime. If it is like a 12 year coverup, then that should be the length of the ban. Also make them ineligible for all inter collegiate sports, not just the bowl games. Dont make it a fine make them pay back all proceeds for inter-collegiate games for all the years they were covering this up. 4 years would be a ban for just a few violations of recruiting or something like that.

If a school coach knowingly covered up the fact that children were abused, that should carry a lifetime ban for all sports activities. This is like betting in Baseball. The coach should get a lifetime ban if he knowingly covered up a crime of child abuse. I would go further and charge the coach that covered up child abuse as an accessory after the fact. Prison time should be called for. Citizens have a responsibility to report criminals.

It makes it hard for the people at Penn St. right now but after some thinking I think it sends the right message. Basically: "If you let this shit go on at your school we will destroy your program". Big football institutions will definitely take notice of this and know that they need to pay attention to what goes on because they are still responsible for the conduct of their staff while they are employed by the institution and that "But they are no longer here" is no defense. This is targeted at the name and reputation of the school which universities take very seriously

Too bad Joe Paterno died before all of this came down.

True justice would have been for Paterno to have lived long enough to see the victories stipped, and the football program collapse.
