I cannot watch this show anymore. One of the waiters was complaining hard that he only got a $40 tip from one table (about 10% of the meal). They seem to be more interested in wannabe acting / getting on camera and less so about serving people. I would not want to be eating at this restaurant as the waitstaff seem overly dramatic. Plus, if they get pissed at low tips, imagine what they will do in to your food! yikes!

i think he said his total take for the day was 60? and the 40 dollar table sat there the whole night. he was there since morning. so per hour he got paid squat. many restaurants don't have hourly wages i think.

Then get a different job. Duh.

ugh, thats what you'd say to a person stuck at a job for months or years that complains about their pay. the guy was on his first day for f*ck sake, and its not a set wage either, its one based on many factors.

Then the pay fluctuates. And the people working there know this going in. So they shouldn't be complaining and expecting $150 tips from every table they serve. If they want a steady, dependable paycheck, get a job in a regular place. Otherwise they should STFU.

I read somewhere that the waiter staff was exclusively picked by the people making the show, not the restaurant staff. Basically they hired people that would make a good show, how good of a waiter you are had nothing to do with it. They might even be actors for all we know. That being said, I liked the first show I saw, missed last nights though.

Yes they do, though it is only about 2.15/hour. But they have to raise it to minimum if tips don't cover the difference. So let's see: Assume that guy worked 12 hours - 60/12 = $5 in tips per hour + 2.15/hours wage = $7.15/hour in total wages. He will get that at most low wage jobs (retail, fast food, supermarket, etc). I agree with Slick, if the guy doesn't like it he should STFU and find another job.

I tend to side with the waiter on this one, a 10% tip from a 4-6 hour table is not right. When you're a waiter working in a supposed high-end restaurant, you want to make some money, and he's expressing his frustration. I'm sure he will go work somewhere else if he can't make halfway decent money over time.

The opening night didn't look all that busy there (notice that they didn't have any wide shots of the whole place packed?), and it looked like they had too many waiters, which is why they were frustrated.

I make tips, and lately, the place I work hasn't been so busy, and they've been overscheduled. I was getting frustrated only making $70-85 on a Friday-Saturday for the past couple months, where I used to be able to count on $100-120, and often more (up to $160), so I got a new job at the very competitor that's killing the place I work now. I'm simply worth more than $70-85, and I know it. I start tonight. :)

That was priceless. I was only hoping that the guy would throw a plate at him or something.

Regarding the tipping thing.... They could always institute a 15% surcharge on parties of more than 3 in peak hours, like other NYC restaurants do.

after last nights episode i decided i never wanted to eat at rocco's restaurant...

he seems kinda like a d!ck,

but on the other hand, i dont get where the waiters come off acting like they should have a say in what type of restaurant it is...they got hired to wait tables, not to decide what type of food was going to be made...if they have complaints about things needed to wait tables that is one thing, but not to run the restaurant...

I did! This is probably the first reality show I've watched, simply because it isn't as contrived (at least in theory) as the rest. All I have to say is, I would never eat there. I haven't seen one person actually like the food ( I know, whiners make for better TV, but still). And the guy with the broken arm, I'd be pissed. They send you home, call you up, have you waste an hour of your day coming back down, and then send you home again. Although, I have to ask: why did NBC send a camera back to his house if they didn't know that was going to happen? I wonder how much NBC is pulling the strings behind the scenes in order to get a good show.

One final question: how long ago were these shows taped? Is the restaurant still open, is it still relatively new, or has it settled down some?

How the heck does he get 300+ reservations in a unproven restaurant?

i also dont understand why rocco just spends the entire time hanging out...

it seemed a lot of people went there assuming he was the chef...

and while i dont think the waiters should have a say in the type of restaurant, nice silverware + paper plates???? and dishes that cost $25 coming in paper plates? wtf?

Long time ago I worked at a restaurant getting it ready to open in a major downtown city spot. It was exactly like this damn show. Nothing goes right for the first while. It takes time for the staff to gel.

I don't know why anyone eats at new places right away. Wait a month for them to get thier stuff together.

why would anyone want to eat at that restaurant and pay that price? One customer orders chicken and gets veal. :|

man i read some user reviews - people said "the food was cold" and the other half (women mostly) rave about the restaurant.

i LOVE watching everyone bitch. its great.

now the staff whines a LOT. lordy. rocco reminds me of my current boss - will say anything to keep a customer happy. watching this show is a high stakes reality tv version of my job. its eerie.

Man, i'm seeing this show for the first time and i'm tense just watching it! Employees are leaving and Rocco gave one lady a scooter to come back and she told everyone else. Now all the employees are unhappy because they didn't get a bonus. I like the show though.
