NBA raises salary cap and luxury tax

Interesting i guess.

One thought did come to mind though:
I'm a die-hard laker fan, but I can't help it but notice that this was done to partly to keep the future of the Laker's intact. Bryant and Gasol are huge contracts. Keeping the young stars (Bynum, Farmar, the machine (lol), etc..) with the team will be expensive. Instead of paying about $10million over the lux tax next year, the Laker management now saves a bit with the higher lux tax.

Of course, it was also done to facilitate the moves and signings that is going on, but I can't get it out of my head.

Team salaries:

And that's *AFTER* they dumped Steve Francis and his 20 million contract. A year or two ago it was like 118 meeeeelion dollars.

Ummm, the salary cap and luxury tax are increased automatically every year by a set formula. It has nothing to do with "keeping the Lakers intact".

The big three in Boston account for almost 60 million themselves. That's three players on one team that make up for a higher payroll than about 3/5 of entire teams in the league.

And sadly, to trade for Ray Allen and KG they had to trade matching salaries.

The cap and luxury tax threshold are not random numbers that he NBA just changes on a whim to help a particular team (I'm a diehard Laker fan too BTW). To get it the NBA projects the basketball related income for the next season, takes a defined % of that (right now it's 51%), subtracts projected benefits, and then adjusts it based on whether or not the previous years cap was set too high or low compared to the actual BRI. Then they take that amount and divide it by the number of teams to get the cap. The luxury tax is set in a similar way. They take 61% of the BRI, subtract the benefits adjust from there, and then divide by the number of teams.

And yet most Athletes are egotistacal and think they are in control of the world. They don't understand they have a once in a lifetime opurtunity. Must be nice to live such an easy life.

and only 2 of the top 25 are knicks!

I would say Marbury is the most overpaid player on that list.

Hell, New York is paying for guys that aren't even playing any more. Aren't they still paying Allan Houston 20 million to sit at home?

Fook, I'll sit home for only $1 million.

Any less than that, and it's insulting.

LOL at this description

Explosive, quick, smart, incredible ballhandler... Great moves... A physically gifted player... Looks great playing the pick-and-roll... Was able to score more than 20 points and deliver almost 10 assists per night... Great durability... Mediocre defensive player... Not a great shooter... Doesn't make his teams win... Has probably already played his best basketball.

the knicks picking up duhon for 2 years $11 mil is going to be as bad as the jerome james/jared jeffries deal <-- 2 worst deals of all time
walsh has got to be smarter than this.

The fact that he got two years is significant. Look at the Knicks payroll in 2010/2011, it's under the current cap. I would bet Walsh will look for other ways to cut salary by that time as well. It's the same thing the Nets are doing. They are doing it for the same reason, Lebron James. Lebron has a player option for that year that he very likely could exercise, and the Knicks or Nets are likely destinations. I believe Lebron has a kicker in his shoe contract that pays him a significant bonus if he plays in a major market like New York or LA. Wade and Bosh may also be free agents at that time.

so is D-Wade, which is a gamble because 1. he is injured and him and 2. whoever else they team with him given their salary cap is not going to be enough for a championship.
the same can be said for bosh.

even LBJ isn't going to go anywhere with the knicks.

but back on topic, why are they even bothering to acquire duhon. he is not all that great, and not worth what they will be paying him.
just cope with marbury this year, mold nate into a better pg and just let the rest of the contracts ride out.

Does this take signing bonuses into account?

Yes, signing bonuses are divided equally among the guaranteed (i.e., non-option) years of a contract for team salary calculations.

at what point do they pay luxury tax (if i understand it right) and why the hell are the bullies not dropping money on a low post scorer!

Unlike the NFL, most of the $$ in NBA contracts are guaranteed, so signing bonuses are not such a big deal.

As a Warriors fan the last week has been a roller coaster.
Baron opts out: meh, he'll resign.
Baron has agreement with Clippers: Crap! (low), but that means lots of cap room, hmmm (heading back up).
Offer made to Brand: very interesting.
Clippers won't come close to matching it: this is getting good!
76ers get Brand: Triple crap!
Warriors sign Magette for ~$10M/yr: Ugh!
Warriors make ~$4M year offer to Turiaf: double ugh!

I gotta stop being a sports fan.
