don't use tan and incvrease exposure gradually. if you go shirtless all day you'll get burnt in 2 hours...

dont use tan?

Also doesn't the amount of time it takes to get sun burned depend on more than a few factors?

You can still get tan with a higher SPF than that. Also, you'll have to reapply every couple of hours or you'll get burnt. To be honest, I would wear a way higher SPF. You can still get tan and it'll reduce the harmful aspects of the sun. I dunno, I think worrying about a tan is stupid in the first place, but the choice is your's :p

And also, I think MegaV's advice is terrible. No offense to you, MegaV, but your skin still gets damaged even if you don't get burned. If you speak with a dermatologist, they could better explain the process, but the damage still gets done. Sunscreen should always be applied if you plan to be at outdoor events of any kind.

I always had trouble forcing myself to do it, but it's what you gotta do. I grew my hair out so I wouldn't have to put any sunscreen on my forehead that would drip into my eyes while running, lol. I've also had my fair share of sunburns from hating sunscreen :\ Sunscreen, in essence though, is the way to protect yourself from skin cancer in the future.

I suppose it depends how pasty you are in the first place. Will this be your first exposure to the sun this season?

For my chest and upper arms yes. I've had plenty of sun exposure but I always wear t-shirts.

I am 41 and had Squamous Cell Carcinoma/skin cancer in my early 30's. I grew up on Cocoa Beach in the 70's when sun protection meant white zinc oxide on your nose. For the last 8 years, I haven't done anything outside without Neutrogena 55spf or the like on. I haven't had any further cancerous or precancerous skin problems, and see a Dermatologists annually.

My opinion: Tans look healthy, but the reality can be quite different. I still get color despite the block when surfing for hours, or on the disc golf course, but some of the more harmful rays aren't getting through near as much as they would without the block.

Then if it's your first exposure for the season slip slop slap!

We've got some great antitanning ads here.

I don't get tanning on purpose, lying on the beach for a week etc. It might look good, but you are just increasing your chances of skin cancer and you will have ugly leathery skin when you are older. I'm pretty light skinned, I get a bit of colour from hking/swimming etc. but lying outside to 'tan' I do not do.

I light glow on someone's face gives them a "healthy" appearance. Plus in Winter people like to advertise a coloured face to say, hey look at me, I've been somewhere warm!

As far as laying out and tanning, it's becoming a dieing art. But if you are on a beach holiday, what else are you there to do?

Plus like here, when it's 30 degrees and you're at the beach you aren't going to sit there all bundled up.

Water Sports
Beach Volley Ball
Frisbee
Football
bike ride
run
surf fish
skim board
paddle ball

And many other activities depending upon the particular beach you visit.

That sounds like a lot of activity for a beach holiday, much more then 12oz curls, and the occasional effort used to roll over.

Either way, it's good practice to always put on some sort of SPF whenever you go out in the sun.

I don't really tan if I'm wearing anything higher than like....4? I usually don't wear anything. I'll have skin cancer sooner or later.

Your apathy will go away when it actually happens. It's the same way smokers are until they realize their mistake. Wear some sunblock. It's simple and it may save your life.

I burned good this weekend. No peeling but I'm red. One of those deceptive days where the sky was clear but it wasn't even really that warm.
