National Honors Society? Is this a big deal?

i forgot about it this year, i'mll join next year, just to put it on college resume, i've heard from other people its a load of bs too, but if colleges like it i'll do it.
 
It's a waste of time if u don't enjoy it. The adcoms aren't idiots. Do it cuz you wanna do it, not cuz it 'looks good' because it doesnt' really.

well, if that was the case then there would be no one in our NHS. It's not active at all, people just do it because their parents make them and they think it looks good to colleges. One of those things like it couldn't hurt to try to get accepted, they don't have to do anything for it anyway.
 
I'm a nerd. I'm ranked #1 in my class (currently a junior, so it could change, but doubtful), I'm in a crapload of band stuff (city bands, state bands, school bands, extracurricular school bands, community college band, to name a few), I work, and I've done a small handful of other things such as the school musical and academic bowl and I will be participating in tennis. And I put a couple of other random things that I could think of on the application. I didn't get accepted. My other friend did get accepted and the main difference between his in my application is that he had some "service" activities from church and I don't go to church. It was bullshit. Anyone know of things I could do (voluntarily-wise) that could maybe get me accepted? I would really like to get in just to be on the safe side. I'm also going to play a sport this year so I'll be able to add that. I don't like church and I hate most of the people who go to my church.

I can't see any school that would turn down the valedictorian for someone who volunteered at church, well unless you are planning to go to Bob Jones University 😛 Seriously, though, this just shows how random it is. Colleges know this and if you maintain your GPA it will makes 0 difference on your app.

How about volunteer at a shelter or at a hospital? Honor society likes to see volunteer work. It has nothing to do with him going to church unless you're deep in the bible belt and even then i doubt it.
 
Dunno, I couldn't get in at my school because of the good behavior requirement or whatever it is. I still got in everywhere I applied 😛 Congrats on getting in tho, besides rehersal means you get out of more class!

We have a period called SRT, kind of like a study hall, during the second half we'll be doing it. I would have been sitting around anyway 😛

No. I was in the top 2% of my High School class and I was never offered membership in NHS. Needless to say, it didn't matter a at all for my college applications 😀

I used to joke that I was dishonorable and that I would start NDS, or National Dishonor Society, for people like me who had good grades and did stuff outside of school but just never made it into the club.

Don't they charge you money to get in? I recall being sent their stuff, probably more than once.

Some college honor society sent me stuff in the mail. Soon as I saw that they wanted $75 to join I ignored the crap.

I think he means "National Honor Roll", a worthless mail-order award. NHS is completely different.
 
It's not a big deal. In fact I got kicked off of it my senior year of high school for some stuff I did that wasn't exactly legal. I still got in Junior Community College....just kidding I got in a 4 year College with scholarships and everything.
