That sucks but I guess you do take the risk by going, but I doubt that you are fully aware of the full scope of risk when buying your ticket and bringing your kids. I figured they would have stronger safeguards in place, but I guess not and several hundred pounds of metal flying at 200 mph is going to do some damage.

And then there are all of the other fans that suffered from sitting there watching such a boring "sport". :p

I read the title as 'NASCAR crash injuries fans.'

I thought someone Dale Earnharted themselves. I'm disappointed.

Way to fail spectacularly at driving in a circle, you morons. How is it that things like WRC, where people stand in the middle of the track as cars slide sideways torwards them, have less fan injuries?

Well, the only reason that anyone watches that stuff is for the crashes anyways. I guess you could argue that they had the best seat in the house :ninja:

Hope they're all OK of course, but F1 FTW.

“First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers are with our race fans,” Chitwood said. “On the incident, we responded appropriately according to our protocols and had emergency medical personnel at the incident immediately.

“We’re in the process of preparing the facility and will be ready to go racing tomorrow.”

Honestly, you cannot conceptualize or realize the vast differences between cars passing spectators one at a time, a minute or so apart vs. 20+ cars in a pack?

And here I thought you were a "car expert."

FAN CAM from grandstands.
Watch closely, one minute there is a camera man just inside the fence at the gate, next minute, he's gone.
He was standing just about where the cars engine landed.

Do you really think there are fewer fan injuries in WRC? Really?

They will all consider this the best day of their lives.

Not all of them, local coverage had the hospital working on a man that was lacerated from his shin to his hip, he's in stable condition now. I've seen the fence up close, it's interwoven with thick steel cables but if an engine block, tires and front end parts can make their way through it a redesign may be in order, I have seen it hold up to some horrific impacts but this is not good. Part of the Daytona experience is to stand on that walkway as 40 cars whiz by at 190+MPH... :)

They should just get rid of the first five rows of seats to prevent that from happening again. You can't see the entire track from there, anyway! All you see is a noisy blur of cars going by, which is only cool for about 5 laps and gets annoying quickly.

I'd rather watch the race on TV than sit there.

Must have been a hell of a hit. I believe it was last year Carl Edwards whole car hit the fence and it was deflected back to the track.

I don't think the 14 year old that was hit by the tire and suspension system was drunk.

Also sounds like he didn't make it.

No local news reports of anyone left in critical condition, where did you hear this from?

It is unbelievable that the driver just walked away from this. Car safety has come a long way since the days of Dale Earnhardt Sr.

Now they need to do some more research on fence safety. A fence like this should not cut the car in 2 and allow debris to get into the stand. That's the theory, making it so might be very difficult.

the fence in the past has done a great job. as someone mentioned it has deflected a car right back on the track. i wonder if old age and wear weakened it?

great. everyone upgraded to stable. rather amazing when you think about it. you have flying shards of mettle and a huge tire going ver fast.

There will be a report sometime in the near future, time will tell.
