You don't have to troll for many listeners when you are credited with one of the best rap albums of all time which is Illmatic.

Instead, you tell me about some hipkid Pop-100 band.

What a letdown.

Actually, Nas is far from a hipkid Pop-100 band. Get yourself educated.

I would put NAS into the Poppy rap scene along with Snoop Dre, Eminem etc..

POP=Popular culture, remember

well then marylin manson is pop. so is tool, hey that album was #1.

So true. And I place them about as high as Brittany and 50 Cent.
ok, tell me something that isn't pop.
You know, just because someone has sold records doesn't make them a part of pop culture, and apparently to your awesome AT'ers, bad.

but according to you, because they've sold a lot of records makes them good artists.

[Nas]
Be, be, 'fore we came to this country
We were kings and queens, never porch monkeys
It was empires in Africa called Kush
Timbuktu, where every race came to get books
To learn from black teachers who taught Greeks and Romans
Asian Arabs and gave them gold when
Gold was converted to money it all changed
Money then became empowerment for Europeans
The Persian military invaded
They learned about the gold, the teachings and everything sacred
Africa was almost robbed naked
Slavery was money, so they began making slave ships
Egypt was the place that Alexander the Great went
He was so shocked at the mountains with black faces
Shot up they nose to impose what basically
Still goes on today, you see?
If the truth is told, the youth can grow
They learn to survive until they gain control
Nobody says you have to be gangstas, hoes
Read more learn more, change the globe
Ghetto children, do your thing
Hold your head up, little man, you're a king
young princess when you get your wedding ring,
Your man is saying 'She's my queen'
[Chorus]

Does nas actually believe the Egyptians were African? I recently saw a special that explained how they dug up bones at the pyramids and compared the DNA to people that lived near the pyramids, and it showed that the Egyptians were of Middle Eastern descent. I don't really care either way, but I don't see the point of spreading something that is just plain wrong.

To some people, obviously they are.

You dumbasses don't understand that music is SUBJECTIVE. There is no good music, there is no bad music, everybody has their own opinions on what is good. If something has sold millions of copies, someone must like it. If I were to say that the Beetles are bad because I don't like them, does that discredit the 150 million records they sold? Seriously, get a clue.

I enjoy some Nas but find his lyrics (this song in particular) really cliched and contrived. Aesop Rock...Even Atmosphere.. delve in similar lyrical territory with far more wit and skill... As far as mainstream rappers go, eminem's not bad but he seems to be jumping on the preaching band wagon (lose yourself).. oh well.. I guess I really miss the days when a group like P.E. were considered mainstream!

i agree.

i hate when musical elitists come here and post how so-and-so mainstream rappers/bands/etc suck, and how only their "underground" rapper/band/etc is what real <insert music genre> is supposed to be.

i hope these people don't eat at mc'donalds and burger king, because that is obviously NOT what food is supposed to be. Also, they probably wear homemade clothes, cause that's what clothes are suppose to be.

The mainstream vs. underground argument isn't about classism to me.. Sometimes it can be- indie rock fans are very much guilty of that.. When it comes to rap, my problem with mainstream acts is that they're music is very much tailored to suburban white kids... The music / message is often really watered down and high production/dance-ability is often what the main concern is (not lyrics).. I prefer underground acts becuase some of them manage to do both well - el p, aesop, etc. have great beats and great lyrics.. some mainstream acts do the same... It's just that "pop" music has the tendency to simplify and homogonize things to annoying levels (kudos to the acts that can make it big while keeping their integrity - i.e. the beatles, radiohead, tupac, etc.)

you're missing the point.

does it homogenizing and watering down music make it bad? no, just bad for you.

not everyone who listens to music needs to analyze it down to that level. some people listen to music, just because they like the way it sounds, simple or not.

you should be able to add 'in my opinion,' in front of all the posts here. i saved time by omitting it.

Looks around, not seeing any rap haters...
Just because people don't like Nas (or whatever artist you want to use) doesn't mean they hate the whole genre.

People who think Nas isn't pop, doesnt get MTV airtime =

M O R O N S

also, MTV2 is not a source for less commercialized music. IT'S STILL MTV YOU IDIOT

Nas is pretty lame, Illmatic was alright for like 5 minutes. Although his message in this song is positive, there are 50 other MC's who could have put it together more eloquently.

hah, good one. I love it when people can't argue the point so they make a comment like that. Basically, what you are saying is I'm right.

ok smartass, are you one of those elitists who thinks someone can't be good if they aren't playing in their garage or rapping on a street corner? Here's a tip for you...if they were good, someone would buy their stuff. They aren't good, so they remain on their street corner. It doesn't have to be platinum, but if it didn't suck ass, someone would buy it. Welcome to the world, all knowing heartthrob.
oh, and Nas doesn't get signifigant MTV time.

Funny, I'm talking about MTV. No matter what our heartthrob friend says, there is a signifigant difference.

You're right, MTV and MTV2 are owned by different companies and are completely different

Who cares if they are owned by the same company? Mazda is owned partly by Ford, does that mean the RX8 is no better than a Taurus? Are Mercedes no better than Chrystler? They are totally, 100% different.

Apples and Oranges. Both "MTV'S" just play endless mind numbingly stupid "hip-hop" inbetween reality shows about fraternity sausage fests and glam-poppunk trying to cleverly disguise itself as 'rock' music.
