I would almost be willing to say that POP music is anything that gets significant airtime/MTV time
I probably need to limit it in another way to but, I can't my brain hurts (ancient philosophy has been killing me)
ok, Nas doesn't really get that.
Ok, I'm tired and not thinking right. I would define it as anything that gets any significant airtime on MTV/VH1/MM/BET. I would almost argue that anyone that gets played at all on either of these channels would be pop culture. I do consider Marilyn Manson (already just about faded out) and Tool (they will soon) as pop culture. It doesn't have to be Brittany singing about cute boys and dancing, any type of fad that gets picked up by the mainstream I consider pop culture. And yes, imo almost all of it is utter crap.
Tool is utter crap? Lay off the crack pipe buddy. Pray tell, what isn't crap? Name a few bands/musicians here, I am intruiged and would like to know more.
Yes, I think tool is garbage. I also can't stand NIN. Woe is me. I'm about to go to bed but if you dig through
here you can basically find how I feel about pop culture, big labels, money bands and the rest.
Oh crispy christ. You're one of those "
Indier than thou" people, where if the bands you listen to are even semi-recognizable, you'll feel inadequate and try to seek out another band no one has heard of.
Hating something because it's popular is among the more inane biases. Have you ever stopped and listened to Tool? Deconstructed their lyrics? Considered the implications of a certain song or them? Noticed influences of Bachian Fugues? No? How sad.
Reminds me of this one girl I knew. She was so indie, that if she walked into a Best Buy or Virgin Records, she'd spontaneously combust. I wonder what ever happened to her?
Anyways, I hate the RIAA as much as the next guy. More so, even. I've even taken the time to write my congresspeople protesting the various moves they've made in the last several years.
But that isn't going to stop me from listening to a band that puts out good music, regardless of the fact they have a major label contract. Some bands like Tool, Dream Theater, and Tori Amos have such a large following they can effectively tell the labels to f*ck off while they make art, and they do.
