Yeah, pop bands sing about Jungian philosphy. I'll keep that in mind. Until Saturn comes back around.

duh! They've sold a decent amount of records, they are pop music, and a part of pop culture!

I don't buy that definition.

As far as I'm concerned, "Popular culture" is a misnomer, an archonism that has somehow survived despite being an utterly useless phrase.

Tune in to a top 40 Pop station. Do you hear Tool? No?

That's because Pop music, as a genre != Popular culture.

I agree. I was sarcastically mocking the stupidity of the above posters.

ok, Nas doesn't really get that.

Ok, I'm tired and not thinking right. I would define it as anything that gets any significant airtime on MTV/VH1/MM/BET. I would almost argue that anyone that gets played at all on either of these channels would be pop culture. I do consider Marilyn Manson (already just about faded out) and Tool (they will soon) as pop culture. It doesn't have to be Brittany singing about cute boys and dancing, any type of fad that gets picked up by the mainstream I consider pop culture. And yes, imo almost all of it is utter crap.

What about MTV2? Hardly anyone would consider that stuff to be pop music, and that gets plenty of viewers.

It basically boils down to semantics and nobody has been wrong or stupid. Both definitions are okay.

Yes, I think tool is garbage. I also can't stand NIN. Woe is me. I'm about to go to bed but if you dig through here you can basically find how I feel about pop culture, big labels, money bands and the rest.

Not at all. If he lists artists that I also enjoy, it'll perhaps give me enough insight to challenge his distaste of Tool and bring him 'round. On the other hand, if he lists bands which I can argue are the ones that are actually awful, then I'll go that route.

I don't take craps on people who don't deserve it. ;-)

Oh crispy christ. You're one of those "Indier than thou" people, where if the bands you listen to are even semi-recognizable, you'll feel inadequate and try to seek out another band no one has heard of.

Hating something because it's popular is among the more inane biases. Have you ever stopped and listened to Tool? Deconstructed their lyrics? Considered the implications of a certain song or them? Noticed influences of Bachian Fugues? No? How sad.

Reminds me of this one girl I knew. She was so indie, that if she walked into a Best Buy or Virgin Records, she'd spontaneously combust. I wonder what ever happened to her?

Anyways, I hate the RIAA as much as the next guy. More so, even. I've even taken the time to write my congresspeople protesting the various moves they've made in the last several years.

But that isn't going to stop me from listening to a band that puts out good music, regardless of the fact they have a major label contract. Some bands like Tool, Dream Theater, and Tori Amos have such a large following they can effectively tell the labels to f*ck off while they make art, and they do.

Lol. And yes, about 4 to 5 years ago if I had never heard of a band that must mean they are crap, why else would they not make it onto MTV and the radio right? I've listened to my share of Tool and I even own a copy of Lateralus. To me they are not even worth pirating, but to you Mozart. It's all taste and there is no point in arguing about it. I don't hate all bands that make it big. There are some good bands that made it up there, but for the most part I really don't think that there is much to be offered in the mainstream pop culture.

There is a big difference between not liking something and thinking it is crap.

I don't like many of the bands you listed on your list in the other thread. That doesn't mean I think they're crap. I respect them as artists, but don't particularily enjoy the music they make.

You, on the other hand, called Tool crap. A band like Tool, as intelligent and talented as they are, do not deserve to be called crap despite their unbelieveable success in the mainstream. I wish all the unknown bands I listen to made it as big as they did. A day and age where I turn on MTV and see the Gathering, Symphony X, and Ayreon would be glorious indeed.

But then, I'm not very judgemental and don't feel a need to constantly sh!t on things to make me feel better about my tastes.

If you're willing to admit that you unfairly labeled Tool "garbage," and you meant to say that you simply don't enjoy their music, then I have no argument with you.

Hmmm, caught in a pickle. While I do not enjoy Tool one bit, I will retract my previous statement saying that they are utter garbage. I do not think that Tool is complete crap, they do a good job of putting on a show for people. I guess it's just not for me.

Happy? :p

Quite so. I respect your ability to reverse a previous statement, many people would sooner stick to their guns and go down in a barrage of fire than admit they may have misspoken. My hat's off to you.

It's just a *tad* ideal wouldn't you say?

Exactly. He sounds like a sap, trolling for listeners. "Hey Nas, on your next record lets have a song with children singing the chorus, and an ultra positve message." Bling bling big money rap is the worst but this doesnt fall far behind.

lol, someone must have not seen the 'hate me now' video. yes, he recreated Jesus's crucifixation in the video.

i like nas. probably my favorite artist. he is lyrically gifted and his form of rap is different from others, that is he can tell a story with his words, rather than talk about the same thing (ahem, jay-z). he speaks out on political subjects and also relays a positive message. i dont really like a lot of ny rap, but nas i can listen to, and i respect his talent.

As the night close down on the Earth like gray dark rings
Light of cities in the nights, destination for Kings
with big dreams, like Castro, overthrew Bautista
from Cuba, and pointed nukes toward the U.S.
About to shoot us for revolution; that's how you gotta move
A lot of rules, some locked in solitude
Curse the day of they birth confused, who's to be praised?
