... classic being defined as the game has been out at least 5 years. The game can be from any genre ... RTS, FPS, etc.

I'm curious.

5-y/o game is already a classic? :D

Mine will be the AD&D Gold Box series. They are why I started playing computer games.

Only been out 5 years?

Well for me when I think of a classic game, I think of Quake, or Duke Nukem 3D. Quake more-so though, god those were the days.

TIE Fighter - Awesome SW space sim. Loved that you got to play as the bad guys for a change. This was of course before KOTOR games, but even then those games aren't quite the same as actually being on the bad side.

Message to LucasArts - Make us a new SW space sim that doesn't suck ass! The last one was X-wing Alliance and that's like a decade old. I would KILL for a SW space sim with the expansiveness of X3.

Also gotta give GTA III a mention, rockstar went from this:

Just wow, i knew in my head what i wanted from the next GTA game, back then i thought it would be really cool if they could have a 3D city you could roam about in and they delivered that and more. Awesome graphics, fantastic gameplay, and a great storyline to boot, a 10/10 in those 3 core areas, what a game! It also spawned the awesomeness that was vice city which was even better for me as i am a massive 80's fan.

Starcraft gets my vote for longevity, GTA III gets it for wow what an awesome game factor. They even had a near invincible tank. Its like they read my mind.

So many that I really loved. The one I probably played the most was Doom 2 or maybe the original Command and Conquer. Syndicate, Space Quest 3, and Wing Commander 4 were also games that I loved and played a lot of.

I just now replaying System Shock 2 on my recently aquired Windows 98 PC, and it is such a fantastic game.

I enjoyed it a lot when I first played it many years ago, but I was pretty new to the whole FPS thing (and definitley to FPS/RPG hybrids) so I didn't get as much out of it as I could have. The two or three times I played deep into it back then was as a marine.

Now I'm playing as a Navy guy, and it's a completely different game. I realize I didn't even scratch the surface of the depth that's in SS2.

I even think the graphics are pretty good, although whoever did the character models should be tarred and feathered. They're WAY inferior to rest of the visuals.

Other candidates:

Baldur's gate (the first one)
Fallout
Thief
NFS:high stakes
Alpha Centauri

I'd have to go with Ultima Online circa 1997-2000 but I continued to enjoy said game until around 2003. I have many fond memories of how MMO's should be.

Tough one. I'd say Doom or C&C Red Alert

But my all-time most-played game is definitely Panzer General.
