I have lived in HK and NY, now in london. all these cities are either has a river run through it or right next to the sea.

It is hard to think of a city with no water around it. I can think of think Madrid and Atlanta.

Vegas? :D

There's a good reason why most major cities are surrounded or near Water.

Major cities always start next to a river since that is the most important resource. Serves as water source and means of transportation.

No ocean no trading docks. California is rich because of its proximity to all the cargo ships coming from asia.

Thank God Phoenix has the Salt River. It would be a total armpit w/o it.

Several rivers in that area I think.

Damascus qualifies though I think.
And does Jerusalem have water running through it? Don't think it does.

Damascus is on river Barada. Jerusalem has water problems. I think that is the best answer so far. But again it depends on your definition of major city.

tokyo is on tokyo bay. moscow is on the moscow river. berlin is on the spree and havel and has an extensive network of canals that connect it to the sea.
