Any of the oil company mergers could fall into the "worst" category because, in the end, it just means higher prices at the pumps.

do you have anything to substantiate that claim or is this just irrational hatred of oil companies?

Oil corporations are teh debil. I know this because MoveOn says so.

then

AOL Time Warner

then maybe

HP-Compaq

best mergers recently?

Emachines-Gateway
Bank of America-Fleet
JP Morgan Chase-BankOne

Last I checked Cingular was part of SBC.

TWA with whatever the hell airline bought them. No planes fly out of saint louis anymore. I think northwest bought them . . they swore to keep the hub city status, but they cut it back to almost nothing before the ink was dry on the papers. Whores.

lol, that would be the worst ever i think

i seriously hope black and decker doesn't buy out porter cable.. i like PC tools, and would hate to see them start pumping out crap so that the B&D becomes better...

AOL TW was the worst.

Biggest loss of shareholder value in history.

Plus, the two companies had little to offer each other. Hardly any synergies.

The CEO of TW was stupid to believe AOL was actually worth what it was trading for at that time. He must have forgot his beancounting 101.

first of all, this hasn't happened yet (at least it's not yet finalized), so how can it be bad?

secondly, i think it's going to be a great merger (or acquisition, whatever you want to call it) if it is run properly, for Cingular as well as for customers of both companies (coverage, service, plan, etc).

What? Me hate oil companies? No, I don't have hatred towards them. I just think that they made a very big mistake merging. Each of them had their own great strategies. Now, that they've merged and the pool of competition has gotten smaller, there's little incentive to compete.

A very large portion of my investments are in oil stocks.

hahaha

Personally, I'd laugh if McDonalds merged with one of the companies that makes and markets cholesterol lowering drugs. :Q

Or, PETA merging with one of the large ground beef packing plants in Iowa.

Or, PETA merging with KFC.

I think you get the point. 😉

The merger of Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central was probably one of the worst mergers ever. To make a comparison, you have to remember what a huge role the railroads played in this country over the last 150 years. PRR and NYC were the mainstays throughout that period, and this country would be nothing like what it is today without them. And they were huge rivals; so much so that individual CEO's on either side hated each other on a personal level. This would literally be like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs merging, or Intel and AMD, or DSS merging with digital cable. Actually, I don't think those mergers would even compare.

Penn Central was formed in 1968. They didn't turn a profit until 1984!

I am sorry, but Compaq & HP merger has been one of the most successful in recent years. You guys need to read business section in the newspaper.

American bought TWA and there was no reason for them to keep St. Louis as a hub since they have hubs in Chicago, Miami and Dallas

i am sorry, but you need to grow up and realize relying on papers for valuable info is lame. 😉
