Name some underrated actors

Guys: If they've won an Oscar, they're not underrated. Tim Robbins, Christopher Walken, Kevin Spacey -- all good actors, but definitely not underrated ones.

James Spader (Boston Legal)
The entire cast of Arrested Development (well atleast the actors who play GOB and George-Michael)
The guy who plays Sayid on LOST
Candice Bergen (Murphy Brown and now Boston Legal -- not sure if she is considered underrated as she was big in the 80s but dropped off now)

For movies:
Mos Def (Something the Lord Made - check out that movie to see an exceptional performance by him -- great movie as well)

And:

Anthony Hopkins. I think that guy makes every movie perfect. I don't think he has yet won an oscar. Instead they gave it to Jodie Foster for Silence of the Lambs.

And maybe:

Tony Shaloub (Guy who played in Monk)

Samuel L Jackson (yeah I know, but he is STILL underrated)
Peter Stormare
Philip Seymour Hoffman (seems to be getting some respect now with his new movie)

Actresses also?

Samuel L. Jackson is actually OVERRATED in a way. Because he's absolutely perfect for most films (like Pulp Fiction), its assumed he'll be good at roles in films like Star Wars, which IMO turned out to be ridiculously untrue. I love Samuel L. Jackson, but he sucked bad as a Jedi master. The whole American tough-guy thing just doesn't work with that kind of dialogue. That's what British actors are for.

I'll concede on that point. He was wrong for Star Wars. But he plays his "tough guy" parts to a 'T'. Still chuckling about his and Eugene Levy's dialogue in The Man.

Definately Christian Bale. His performance in Batman Begins and The Machinist was awesome. Edward Norton is excellent as well.

So my List changes to:
Mos Def
Christian Bale
Edward Norton

OK, seriously, if everyone and their mother can name several movies an actor is in, he or she is not underrated.

good call on tony shaloub.

anthony hopkins has won an oscar though. in fact he holds the record for the least amount of screen time by an actor to win the oscar for 'best actor in a leading role' (silence of the lambs).

edit: in case you're curious, he was on screen for a shade over 16 minutes.

the machinist was ridiculous. i would definatley say it was one of the most underrated movies EVER. the transformation he had to go through to do that movie, WOW. most people wouldnt believe it was the same guy that was in batman begins. not to mention the story was quite good. christian bale and edward norton both play their roles perfectly in just about all of their movies. bale was great in american psycho. i recently read the book and the whole time, in my head patrick bateman was christian bale, and it fit perfectly. norton was really good in 25th hour

i like the tony shaloub call. i am a big monk fan. i believe he has won a golden globe though.

Some of the names listed here are ridiculous.

Morgan Freeman - Not underrated.
Anthony Hopkins - WTF!? Not underrated.
Christopher Walkin - My favourite actor, not underrated either.
Kurt Russel - Not underrated.
Edward Norton - Not underrated.
John Cusack - Again, not underrated.

Guys, do you know what underrated means?

Stewie Griffin: Yes! Good heavens! Who taught you how to eat? Mickey Rourke?
Stewie Griffin: Why do I know that name? Damn you, Entertainment Tonight!

Seriously though, Mickey Rourke was great as Marv in Sin City.

I would also say Mark Hamill. He's done countless voices for animated shows. He gave the Joker the PERFECT voice. I can't even imagine the Joker sounding different now.
