12 Monkeys.
I still don't know what it was even about, and I'm not about to watch it again to figure it out.
Here's another thing - some movies aren't meant to be "figured out", they're just terrible movies. (Inspired by Death Proof)

The Prestige

I had to rewatch it like 3 times and do some light research into quantum theory before the lightbulb went on.

Pink Floyd's The Wall

I still know people who have watched it multiple times and never figured out what the heck the plot was, or what the wall actually was.
The first time I saw it, it was, shall we say, a psychotropic experience. I understood it perfectly! :D

I was 5......so, yeah...

much later in life (after the nightmares and such), it was clear as a bell ;)

After seeing it for the first time, I realized the director was simply too ambitious and didn't tie up a lot of the loose ends. A major WTF movie when I was younger was The English Patient.

I also didn't really understand The Departed until the second time because Matt Damon and Dicaprio look alike.

I agree with Donnie Darko. I watched it first time, thought it was brilliant (drunk, maybe stoned?)

watched it second time...realized it was rather lame. ambitious, like you said, but too many holes (i was sober that time ;))

as for the Departed...my GF had the same problem...

Magnolia

I got the gist of the general story and got a feel of the mood, but I think it took an online summary/review for me to really 'get' it. Now, it's my favourite movie.

Mulholland Drive
Saw parts of it 2 or 3 times before giving up and going online for a summary.

Magnolia is in my top 10 movies all-time. I can watch it every day..I freaking love it.

What WAS the plot of that movie, anyway? To me, it just seemed like a lot of pointless killing by a psycho with a really screwed up system of professional ethics.

the important thing, is accepting that it is not about Llewelyn or Chigruh. it is more about Tommy Lee Jone's character (who's name, ironically enough, I cant' remember right now), but more than that...about the world around him. growing old, a world-country-that changes, and becomes unlivable as one grows older.

It's a great film. I worship the Coen brothers, but I hated the ending when I saw it in theater. Then, some time later, watched it a second time, and got it.

You have to pay attention to TL Jones' narrations and dialogue. That is what the movie is all about.

Going to watch it again soon. I didn't get it 100% when I watched it either but even so it's a fantastic film!

The Godfather. I fall asleep literally every time I try to watch this movie. Makes things really hard to follow.

The Matrix lost me the first time because I wasn't paying too much attention. When we go from being in the business world to being all haggard and flying in space ships, it gets a bit difficult.
