Good point. But if you're really into music (like myself), you'd know of him. I mean, I'm only 19.... 😱

I definitely agree with you, but even for people who are into music, prog is still usually still the staple of a music "nerd," from what I've seen. Rush, Yes, King Crimson, even Porcupine Tree or Dream Theater get a lot of flak as "music snobbery" around here.

Yep. Speaking of Rush... "By-Tor & The Snow Dog" is on right now. I love this song 😀

One of the greatest guitar interludes EVER.

Not already mentioned:

Richard Thompson
Bruce Cockburn
Chris Whitley (R.I.P.)

not as technically adept but tuneful:
Glen Tillbrook (Squeeze)
Michael Penn

If you like KWS, what you're looking for is Rock fired Blues, see if you can find some:

Monster Mike Welsh (too bad the band is no more)
Five Horse Johnson

If you like Joe Santriani try out Gary Hoey.

in the modern metal realm:

Alexi Laiho of Children of Bodom
Oli Herbert (solo at ~2:30) of All That Remains
Mike Amott of Carcass and Arch Enemy
Ben Weinman of Dillinger Escape Plan
Chris Ojeda and Tony Rohbrough of Byzantine
Tim Millar and Luke Hoskin of Protest the Hero

No one mentioned Paul Gilbert? He should be one of the first names mentioned (definitely before John Mayer!!!). The fact that he hasn't been named yet, proves he's the best guitarist NO ONE has heard of. No one on ATOT anyway. Sad.

The question was guitarists who are unknown.. Gilbert is a legend.

Steve Howe

Are you kidding me? Like people haven't heard of Yes?

Dude, prog rock from the 70s. I can guarantee I can ask every single one of my friends, even the ones who play guitar, and they would have no idea who he is, or even the band itself. They might recognize a song or two but Yes is relatively obscure among my generation.

^Exactly, I'm only 24 and discovered Yes simply by hearing/liking their songs here and there on a rock radio station, I had NO idea who they were until I was like 17 when I was on a classic rock kick and decided to explore them more. But none of my friends even know who they are except for one I played the guitar solo from Starship Trooper to.

Edit: Looks like I'm not alone either, I just saw someone else mentioned Steve Howe earlier in the thread.

That is truly unfortunate. I grew up during the time those bands and others like them were in their heyday, and they were considered anything but "music snobbery." Just shows who the true snobs are. And those "snobs" you know are really missing out on some fine music. Sad, really.
