I definitely agree with you, but even for people who are into music, prog is still usually still the staple of a music "nerd," from what I've seen. Rush, Yes, King Crimson, even Porcupine Tree or Dream Theater get a lot of flak as "music snobbery" around here.

Dude, prog rock from the 70s. I can guarantee I can ask every single one of my friends, even the ones who play guitar, and they would have no idea who he is, or even the band itself. They might recognize a song or two but Yes is relatively obscure among my generation.

^Exactly, I'm only 24 and discovered Yes simply by hearing/liking their songs here and there on a rock radio station, I had NO idea who they were until I was like 17 when I was on a classic rock kick and decided to explore them more. But none of my friends even know who they are except for one I played the guitar solo from Starship Trooper to.

Edit: Looks like I'm not alone either, I just saw someone else mentioned Steve Howe earlier in the thread.

That is truly unfortunate. I grew up during the time those bands and others like them were in their heyday, and they were considered anything but "music snobbery." Just shows who the true snobs are. And those "snobs" you know are really missing out on some fine music. Sad, really.
