Herman Li and Sam Totman of Dragonforce are very fast and I would consider them good, but I don't know if you would consider them well known or not, after all they did play mainstage Ozzfest in '06. One great guitarist is Jasun Tipton of Zero Hour. He and his brother Troy (bassist) make a great melodic team. Definitely not big, but they are very very good imo.

another vote for trey anastasio, good stuff

keller williams is another favorite of mine. hes also a one-man jam-band type, adna little folksy. there are a few songs on his homepage, but imo, he is *far* better heard live than on a studio recording.

you can find some of his stuff on etree free and legal. as well as some stuff on archive.org and if youre into trying out different music i suggest giving him a shot.

Craig Chaqico is what I am listening to now. Used to play in Jefferson Airplane/Starship. I like his stuff.

Edit: I also like Pat Metheny . Excellent music on the jazzy side which I am partial to, but very enjoyable.

He sucks; he can't play a melody to save his life. Sure he's got crazy moves, and that's respectable, but he can't hold a song together. And yes, JS80, Satriani is big.

Check out Peter Green. He was probably one of the greatest guitarists ever, but a short life/drug abuse cut it short.

Off the top of my head, the 2 best guitarists I know of that don't get enough recognition are Robin Trower and Alex Lifeson.

Huh? Peter Green is still with us. He hasn't died yet. His career was cut short by severe mental illness. For those who don't know of him, he was the original founder of Fleetwood Mac, long before Stevie Nicks or Lindsey Buckingham joined the group.

Monte Montgomery is pretty awesome. He does some things with an acoustic guitar that make you think it's actually an electric.

I beg to differ. I play guitar so I usually keep up on who good guitarists are and I've only heard of Trey. Yes, I am admitting that I am ignorant, but it shows to go ya that just because you have heard of someone and assume they are famous doesn't mean they really are. I play mostly metal but listen to everything, so that's probably why I don't know them even though I do try to keep my musical horizons open.

BTW, I will add Alex Skolnick. He played for the thrash metal band Testament, but has since started a jazz trio and also plays for Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

Are you kidding me? Like people haven't heard of Yes?

Dude, prog rock from the 70s. I can guarantee I can ask every single one of my friends, even the ones who play guitar, and they would have no idea who he is, or even the band itself. They might recognize a song or two but Yes is relatively obscure among my generation.

Good point. But if you're really into music (like myself), you'd know of him. I mean, I'm only 19....
