like the title says, can anyone name me a thought-provoking/'emotionally' powerful movie? I really enjoy a really good, deep movie. Something that leaves you for the next few days in a state of awe over what you just watched. To name a few movies I was that way with:
Butterfly Effect
Requiem for a Dream

I was in awe from:
The Punisher
Constantine
The entire Band of Brothers series
The Pianist

What puts me in that state of awe is not the action, thats not a required part, but the power and depth of the storyline. If its not performed well, I wont get anything from it either. A-class movies in terms of acting abilities is usually a prerequisite. But yea, its usually an already-powerful subject matter (as is the case of The Pianist, Band of Brothers, and Requiem for a Dream.. Constantine can be said to be powerful in those terms as well due to the religious/hell theme.).

So there it is, what I am looking for. Anyone have any ideas? Till then I am gonna watch War of the Worlds as its just a kickass movie. :)

THE PUNISHER?????
WTH ARE YOU SMOKING????

nothing at the moment, come back later for some salvia ;)
again, it wasn't necessarily a thought-provoking movie, as it was more of an awe-struck type of movie for me. I thought it was delivered perfectly and I am a violence-whore. All the action in the movie made it even better, but I thought the self-vigilantism was actually great. Acting was believeable and just felt like it was put together and delivered quite cleanly.

The Insider was pretty good...

Saw V for Vendetta today - Not bad, but a little contrived.

Also liked Thin Red Line, Saving Private Ryan, and Jarhead.

Constantine, by the way, was a disappointment in that they should have used a better actor for the lead character. Keanu Reeves hasn't given a good performance since Bill & Ted.

Just out of curiosity how old are you?

Judging from your taste in movies i am gooing to guess in the 15-20 range.

I don't let the critics and box office ratings decide what I watch, I watch mostly independent and foreign films. But really if you think a thought provoking movie is one that is "kick-ass" maybe you should reevluate your definition of thought provoking.

Now if you want to watch some though provoking movies I would recommend the Criterion Collection.

Because that is exactly how it would happen.

I loved Contact. But I haven't watched T.V. for a year or so, books are much more intuitive when it comes to storytelling.

thought provoking? yeah, seeing a man being flayed within an inch of his life and then being crucified, in every graphic, exaggerated detail really made me think.

manchurian candidate
man on fire
sling blade
sleepers
the sum of all fears
we were soldiers
changing lanes
15 minutes
the devil's advocate
falling down
road to perdition
good morning vietnam
one flew over the cuckoo's nest

that's all i can think of right now

Dr. Strangelove
2001: A space Odyssey (gets better every time I watch it... Watch it once, then read up on the symbolism that is strewn throughout the entire movie, it's cool)
The Green Mile
V for Vendetta (actually, yes most movies bases on comic books are utter crap, especially and including the punisher... but V for Vendetta is a shining exception)

many of my favorite have already been mentioned. I can't think right now, homework has taken its toll on my brain at the moment :(

If you can look past the violence I found "Reservoir Dogs" to be well worth watching.

For a movie that never really made it mainstream there are some talented actors that deliver very good performances.

Some really good movies listed here. However, in my opinion the Punisher was a scab on the already disease ridden ass of Hollywood. That final scene where Travolota is slowly dragged through the car lot while the cars blow up around him in the shape of a skull? Sweet merciful crap . . . thank you hollywood for lowering the collective intelligence of anyone watching that movie. I had high hopes for that movie. I really enjoyed the Punisher story and thought there was a lot of potential. Unfortunately Hollywood befouled another very serviceable premise.

Some 'thinking movies' I've liked:

The Cell: Not a great movie, but some amazing visuals.
25th Hour
Jacob's Ladder: Didn't really care for this movie, but it definitely got me and my friends talking.
